Information Services Division (ISD) is the primary provider of IT services to UCL. We support and enhance learning, teaching, research and administrative processes by providing information- and technology-related services to over 50,000 staff and students of UCL and associated institutions.

Our goal is to be the leading IT services group in the HE sector and we are growing our team’s capability in experience/UX, agile development, security, cloud, service management and partnering. We are modernising our technology foundations, digitising the processes of the university to transform experience for students and staff, and partnering across the university to drive differentiation in UCL education and research.

Faculty IT & Partnering provides local specialist applications and systems support and IT strategic business partnering for users in the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS), in the Institute of Education (IOE), the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and to departments in the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Sciences and Laws (SLASH).

As an Application and System Specialist in the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Sciences and Laws (SLASH), you will be responsible for providing support for both teaching and research. This role provides an attractive opportunity for someone with not only technical support skills but also with the desire to develop new skills to support innovation and supporting staff and students to make the best use of new developments in technology. Additionally, you’ll form part of the Faculty Digital Development Product team to support the development of digital solutions with the Microsoft Power Platform suite of tools.

Your responsibilities will involve the following:

  • Provide systems administration support for specialist applications supporting research and teaching, including server applications and web and cloud hosted solutions
  • Work with product and platform owners to identify improvements and prioritise into a backlog
  • Participate in scrum and sprint planning meetings
  • Understand the research and teaching that the technology is supporting
  • Provide specialist and commodity support for academic users.

As a Systems Administrator, you have experience in delivering support services and maintaining specialised application services with the ability to collaborate with teams ensuring central platforms effectively support the faculty’s needs. You will also have strong technical support skills as well as experience developing solutions with the Microsoft Power Platform suite, specifically SharePoint, Power Automate and Power Apps.

You will also be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience working with and in-depth knowledge of the standard technologies used within UCL: Networks (DNS/DHCP, VPN, Firewall) VMware virtualised environments, Monitoring and logging platforms, Authentication (AD/OpenLDAP/SAML)
  • Experience administering server and client operating systems running either Windows, Linux or MacOS
  • Experience of data analysis and visualisation, ideally (but not necessarily) in an academic or service-oriented context
  • An ability to see the whole picture, get to the root of issues and to understand the true required outcomes of customer requests
  • A flexible attitude with the ability and willingness to understand unfamiliar concepts, ideas, and technologies quickly.
