This position will serve as the Performance Science Applications Developer for Human Performance Collaborative (HPC). HPC is a campus–wide initiative out of the Office of Research that connects assets to create diverse collaborative research teams with the goal of advancing the study of human performance with enhanced focus on performance optimization, mind-body wellness and human machine teaming.  The collaborative aims to conduct life-changing human performance research, impactful community outreach, and enlightening educational programs and content to serve the local to global population.

This role will support the Athletics Performance Innovation Team (PIT) which is a OSU Department of Athletics and Human Performance Collaborative joint effort to enable rapid and agile implementation of Human Performance Research and Applied Sport Science to ensure Ohio State athletes and coaches have every advantage toward peak performance, success in competition, and overall well-being and our work with various Department of Defense agencies.

The role will report to the HPC Faculty Director.

The individual in this role will be responsible for the following performance objectives:  

Power BI Development:

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards for sports and tactical performance analytics.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and translate them into effective visualizations.

  • Utilize DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) to create calculated columns and measures for complex data analysis.

Data Integration:

  • Work closely with HPC faculty and staff to integrate diverse data sources into the Microsoft Enterprise for comprehensive performance analysis.

  • Implement ETL processes to ensure data accuracy and reliability.

User Interface Development:

  • Enhance user experience by developing interactive and user-friendly interfaces with tools such as Power BI, R Shiny etc.

  • Customize and optimize dashboards to meet the specific needs of athletes, coaches, and teams.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with sports scientists, coaches, and other stakeholders to gather requirements and understand the unique needs of different disciplines.

  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure seamless integration of Power BI solutions into larger sports and tactical performance applications.

Quality Assurance:

  • Conduct thorough testing of Power BI reports and dashboards to ensure accuracy and reliability of analytics.

  • Identify and troubleshoot issues, and work towards continuous improvement of the applications.

Documentation, Training and Support:

  • Document development processes, data sources, and application workflows to facilitate knowledge transfer and future enhancements.

  • Provide end-user training and support.

  • Stay informed about the latest updates and features in Power BI and the latest data management systems.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelors Degree Required in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Experience and Qualifications

Required:

  • 1+ years of practical experience in a high-performance sport environment (NCAA Division 1, Olympic, professional sports organization).

  • Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge into NCAA setting.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visualization communication skills.

  • Experience communicating with coaches, staff, and athletes.

  • Proficiency in one of more programming languages (Python, R, SQL, MatLab, etc.)

  • Strong understanding of Power BI and Azure and their capabilities.

  • Familiarity with DAX and data modeling in Power BI.

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Requires successful completion of a background check. Selected candidate may be requested to complete a pre-employment physical including a drug screen.

Desired: 

  • Prior experience in a NCAA sport is desired. 

  • Experience with other data visualization tools is a plus.

  • Eagerness to learn and stay updated on emerging trends in sports technology.

  • Basic knowledge of sports performance analytics and terminology

  • Experience utilizing human performance technologies in an applied setting, such as GPS, RFID, force plates, motion capture, heart rate monitors, sleep trackers etc.

Additional Information:

This position will have a hybrid work structure where employee can work remotely or from the HPC Columbus campus office, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences.
