The Aquatic Animals Programme Leader is in charge of the development and implementation of our strategy on aquatic animals welfare programme.
Key dimensions to the strategy will include seeking political and legislative traction to improve the welfare of aquatic animals, creating an impetus for higher welfare in aquaculture and wild-capture fisheries, raising consumer awareness, and identifying and advancing aquatic animals welfare research.
Main Responsibilities
Team Management:
Manage the Farm Animals team members working full time for the Aquatic Animals Programme, giving them direction towards completing the programme’s objectives;
Coordinate timely input from colleagues towards the implementation of Eurogroup for Aquatic Animals Programme strategy;
Ensure timely and high-quality program administration, including reporting on existing funding grants and the development of further funding grants aimed at growing the aquatic animals programme.
Drive the Aquatic Animals Programme:
Develop and implement a creative political strategy to improve aquatic animals welfare in the EU, in partnership with our members;
Collaborate with our member organisations and other networks to advocate for better protection of aquatic animals at EU and member state level;
Produce relevant briefings, policy and lobby documents, organise external meetings and events;
Build capacity and a like-minded community around the aquatic animals welfare cause;
Contribute to the delivery of the Farm Animals Programme;
Develop good relationships with other key stakeholders such as industry, other fish supply chain actors and NGOs;
Represent Eurogroup for Animals at relevant events;
Monitor international and EU policy developments on sentience and protection of aquatic animals, best practices on higher welfare fish farming and fish production schemes.
Coordination with member organisations:
Organise and manage regular aquatic animals working groups composed of member representatives;
Liaise with the leadership positions of our member organisations when this level of engagement is necessary for the aquatic animals programme;
Supports the grant administrator in their role when selecting topics/grantees of our small grants program which enables under-funded Eurogroup for Animals’ member organisation to advocate for improved aquatic animals welfare.
Skills and Qualifications
At least 5 years’ professional experience ideally in marine biology/fisheries/aquatic animals-related public affairs environment;
Advocacy acumen with demonstrated track record of success, ideally with EU institutions;
In-depth knowledge and understanding of political processes and influencing processes at EU and International levels;
Ability to pioneer new thinking, connect dots and persuade;
Demonstrated knowledge of aquatic animal welfare;
Demonstrated knowledge of aquaculture and fisheries policy;
Strong leadership and managerial skills;
Ability to think strategically and creatively;
Strong conceptual and analytical skills;
Proven project leadership and project management skills;
Professional approach, high standards of delivery;
Strong diplomatic, tactical and interpersonal skills;
Proactive, structured and accountable working style;
Positive team player and service oriented;
