JOB DESCRIPTION

INHS is seeking field technicians (1-3) to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois, focusing on the Mississippi River. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection and lab sample processing. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Macomb, Illinois.

QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates should be in the process of working toward a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology, or a biological-related field. Must demonstrate a working knowledge of, and ability to collect, biological data such as fisheries and water quality in a large river system.  Understanding and experience with standardized long-term monitoring sampling protocols is preferred. Experience using large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles, and maintaining field equipment is also preferred. The candidates will participate in native and invasive fish monitoring, netting, and other appropriate sampling methods, as well as be expected to perform other field, laboratory, and station maintenance duties when needed. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. The individual must have a valid driver’s license and a strong ability to swim. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days, occasional nights, and possible weekends.

Salary: $15 – $17 per hour, depending on experience                                

Available:  April 2024 – July 2024, with potential for extension
