Aquatic Invasive Species Biologist

 Position Overview:

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is seeking a dedicated and passionate Aquatic Invasive Species Biologist to manage the Aquatic Invasive Species program within the North Idaho Region. This role focuses on managing invasive species in the North Idaho region, home to some of the country’s most beautiful waterways. The successful candidate will play a key role in preserving and protecting these vital aquatic ecosystems. 

This position includes significant field work and successful applicants will have experience towing and backing trailers, operating survey equipment, working with motorized and non-motorized watercraft, and working safely in aquatic environments. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and implement aquatic invasive species control programs in the North Idaho region.
  • Conduct field surveys to monitor and detect new aquatic invasive species.
  • Collect and analyze data related to invasive species management and produce reports for stakeholders and partners.
  • Oversee the operation of the region’s watercraft inspection and decontamination stations to prevent the spread of invasive species.
  • Supervise and train watercraft decontamination staff, ensuring compliance with protocols and safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private stakeholders, to develop and implement effective management strategies.
  • Engage with the community through outreach and educational programs to raise awareness about aquatic invasive species.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in aquatic invasive species management or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of aquatic ecosystems, invasive species identification, and invasion ecology.
  • Ability to work comfortably in aquatic environments and conduct fieldwork, sometimes under challenging conditions.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, with experience managing staff.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the region.
