The Great Basin Institute, founded at the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998, is a mission-driven non-profit organization headquartered in the eastern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. GBI has been a leader in the conservation stewardship field for over two decades, supporting thousands of individuals pursuing a career in public land management or advancing their academic standing. An interdisciplinary field studies organization, GBI promotes environmental research, education, and conservation throughout the West. The Institute advances ecological literacy, professional development, and natural/cultural/recreation resource management through educational outreach and direct service programs. Partnering with federal, state and local governments, as well as other NGOs and researchers, GBI supports projects in eleven western states ranging from Alaska to New Mexico, and southern California to northwestern Wyoming, and the Hawaiian islands. 

Working in collaboration with Kalaupapa National Historical Park we seek to hire an Archivist to join our Research Associate (RA) Program and provide archival resource support in Kalaupapa, Hawai’i. The Archivist will support the Museum Program at Kalaupapa National Historical Park by surveying, appraising, accessioning, and cataloging the park archives. Archivist activities will include arrangement, physical processing, rehousing, creation of finding aids, and cataloging of, minimally, 130 linear feet of archival material, which includes paper records and audiovisual formats such as photographic prints, negatives, slides, audiocassettes, and digital media. More specifically, the Archivist’s duties will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Working with park staff to identify records for appropriate disposal;
  • Preparing and organizing permanent records for retention;
  • Arranging, describing, and rehousing permanent records for addition to park archives;
  • Entering catalog records and data in the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) archives module in appropriate series for the archival records that are processed;
  • Creating Finding Aids to reflect the added records, which will be made available to both the NPS and the general public in order to aid park staff, visitors and researchers in using the park archival collections.
  • The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required, and lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more.

Contract Timeline

  • Annual (52-week) appointment beginning in March 2024, or upon availability and successful completion of a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI)
  • Full-time (40 hours per week)

Location:Kalaupapa National Historical Park is located on the island of Molokai. Kalaupapa is a remote area, accessible by daily flights via commuter plane or a three mile hike down a 2,000 foot cliff. The park operates on a 4 day/10 hour schedule, Monday through Thursday. Park Housing will be in dorm like facilities, with a shared en-suite bathroom and community kitchen and lounging area. A gym and several recreational facilities are available to residents. Swimming beaches and community garden are also available. Driver’s license is required to drive park vehicles. A bicycle will be provided for commuting and traversing the park. There is a small grocery store on the peninsula. Daily mail and freight service available. No medical facilities or emergency response on site. Limited cell service is supplemented by Wi-Fi hot spots. State of Hawai’i Department of Health Kalawao County regulations apply. General public access is restricted. Population of Kalawao County is 82.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Wage: $22.25 hourly
  • Paid personal leave, sick leave, and federal holidays

  • Travel relocation stipend: up to $4,700

Job Qualifications:

  • Educational experience with a bachelor’s degree in library and information science, archival studies, museum studies, history, or closely related field – applicants currently enrolled in a program leading to a master’s degree in information science or museum studies are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Previous experience working in an archives setting, including arranging and describing, processing, cataloging, researching, preserving, and housing of collections;
  • Experience with using museum or archival databases;
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision;
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented, possessing strong organizational skills to effectively plan and complete assigned workload within defined timelines;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with a diverse audience including co-workers, members of the public, and agency personnel;
  • Intermediate or advanced skill using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel, with ability to manually enter, manage, manipulate, and graphically display data;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work productively, consistently, and cooperatively independently or as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and
  • Ability to complete activities including prolonged periods of deskwork, lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more.

Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
