Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigates and reports on human rights abuses happening in all corners of the world. We are roughly 500 people of 70-plus nationalities who work to protect the most at risk, from vulnerable minorities and civilians in wartime, to refugees and children in need. The Multimedia Division is where we craft our visual messaging and deliver it to our audiences in order to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.

The opportunity: 

The Media Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an Asia Content Producer Consultant to help extend our reach into Chinese language audiences in Southeast Asia and beyond. Working primarily with the Multimedia and Digital Divisions, the Content Producer will be passionate about human rights and digital media and experienced in video and motion graphics, who can use all the tools available to engage and grow the audience for our material in English and Chinese and potentially other Southeast Asian languages. 

This is a consultancy for one year. This position will preferably be based in Southeast Asia and will report to Multimedia Director based in New York and Deputy Chief Communications Officer, based in Toronto.  

TERMS OF REFERENCE: 

1. Produce, edit, and translate video content and animations to be shared on HRW Chinese language social media channels that will appeal to Chinese and non-Chinese speaking audiences in Southeast Asia up to five times a week;

2. Share and publish other content that will further HRW’s global advocacy objectives with an emphasis on video and audio products as and when required; includes Instagram and Facebook, and possibly other channels;

3. Work with HRW’s Multimedia Division to translate, publish, and promote photo essay captions and video subtitles as and when required in a timely manner; 

4. Monitor and provide monthly analytic reports on the performance of the content produced and overall engagement on our social channels;

5. Assist with influencer and paid growth strategies to triple HRW’s Chinese language social media followers to 120,000 combined;

6. Actively monitor media for breaking news and trending topic opportunities; 

7. Help research alternative platforms to explore possible new pathways for Chinese and non-Chinese speaking audiences in Southeast Asia; and 

8. Perform other tasks as required.

Qualifications

 1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in Chinese and English and translation experience is required. Fluency in traditional Chinese writing system and another Southeast Asian language e.g. Bahasa Indonesia or Malay is highly desirable.

2. Knowledge of leading graphic, audio, and video tools including Adobe Suite, Premiere Pro, and After Effects, and working knowledge of Mac OS and Microsoft Office, are required. Proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop is desired.

3. A strong understanding and track record working on social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and what sorts of content best engages audiences on these platforms is required.

4. Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required. 

5. Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and demonstrates the ability to work well as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment are required. 

6. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required. 

7. Proven ability to collaborate and work cross-functionally is required.

8. Experience working closely with content teams is required. 

9. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required. Ability to recognize social media opportunities is required. Experience with translation workflows is a plus.

10. Experience with a wire service, newspaper, or online journalism site or other news organization in Southeast Asia is desirable.

11. A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.
