Position description

This is a full-time faculty position as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to four years, the first of which may be a trial period. Appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Duties

  • You will have a leading role in planning, administering, and teaching core and elective courses of the Resident Education Program and associated programs.
  • Develop and teach core and elective courses related to national security policy and strategy formulation, theories of war and strategy, international relations, and East Asian regional studies.
  • Review emerging strategic threats and opportunities, national security policy initiatives, national security and defense policy and strategy and concepts, and U.S. policy in East Asia.
  • Engage in scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the curriculum.
  • Provide counsel to faculty and students on subjects related to strategy, policy, international relations, government, history, strategic culture, Interagency operations, and other U.S. policy and strategy systems and procedures.
  • Engage in service (internal and external) in support of institutional missions.
  • Serve annually as a faculty instructor for one seminar, faculty advisor for up to four students, and project advisor for student research projects.
  • Support the development and execution of the National Security Policy Program, various student staff rides, and the National Security Seminar.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This position has a travel requirement up to 10% of the time.

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service starting on or about 1 July 2025 and not to exceed 4 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible earn annual leave and sick leave.

Qualification Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following:

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

1. Master’s degree or PhD in political science, history, national security studies, international relations, government, or related field is preferred. PhD or terminal degree strongly preferred. Doctoral students who expect to complete their Ph.D. prior to July 1, 2025 are eligible and encouraged to apply. Expertise in Asian politics strongly preferred.

2. Ability to prepare, teach, and lecture on subjects related to Asian studies, regional politics in East, Southeast, or South Asia, American foreign policy, grand strategy, and national security decision-making. An established record of superlative teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or Senior Service College level, and experience in seminar-style instruction, is preferred.

3. Record of scholarly research and publication-or evidence of great potential for such research and publication-in areas relevant to the curriculum, to include national security policy and strategy, international relations, political science, history, political economy, regional studies, and the strategic use of military force (e.g., assurance, deterrence, coercion, and compellence). Expertise in regional Asian studies is preferred.

4. A record of successful service to the profession and/or engagement with policy debates, including membership in and service to professional (regional, historical, political) scholarly societies, public history initiatives, or military and defense organizations. A record of successful non-governmental work of a similar nature and scope, such as with a think tank, development organization, media organization, or international organization may also be considered service.

5. Regional language ability is preferred.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
