Position Focus:
The Assistant Athletic Director of Development for Yale Athletics will report to the Associate Athletic Director of Development and will manage the communication and organizational efforts of select associations, while overseeing and assisting with monthly, quarterly and annual events in order to engage Yale student-athlete alumni. The Assistant Athletic Director develops and implements an effective plan in raising annual funds to meet/exceed annual revenue targets for all Yale Athletic Associations, along with a robust stewardship program. The position is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gift prospects for the department of athletics. This position will assist in the annual and leadership gift side of the department. Ability to travel for meetings and special events, some nights and weekends required.
Essential Duties
1. Identifies, cultivates and solicits Yale alumni/alumnae and friends who are capable of making major gifts to the University; creates and presents proposals for consideration according to donor’s interest and financial situation. 2. Initiates and maintains contact with prospective donors. Visits specified regions to cultivate prospective donors. 3. Acts as liaison among the Office of Development, University Officers, various University departments and donors. 4. Solicits major gifts in a geographical region working with donors directly and working with volunteers, Yale administrators and other department colleagues. Develops, writes and presents proposals appropriate to donor’s interest and financial situation. Initiates and maintains contact with prospective donors. 5. Develops financial solicitation programs and meet activity and revenue goals. Promotes positive donor relations. Raises major gifts to fund University programs and enhance development efforts of Schools and Units, with an emphasis on the priorities of the Yale Tomorrow campaign. 6. Devises and recommends cultivation and solicitation strategies. Determines and executes events and programs in support of development activities. Recognizes disinterested donors and devises strategies to redirect their interests. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as volunteers, alumni/ae, friends and other prospective donors to cultivate and solicit gifts. Proactively engages Yale Tomorrow campaign volunteers in a variety of roles, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and events. 8. Interacts with internal contacts such as Deans, Directors, faculty, officers and other Development staff to consult on University needs, formulates proposal strategies and identifies potential donors. 9. Evaluates various gift opportunities and giving vehicles; recommends the most suitable for a particular donor. Assesses success of development events and programs and recommends changes. 10. Keeps abreast of University events and disseminate University information to team members as it becomes available. 11. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required. Four years of even planning and/or related experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Entrepreneurial approach to fundraising, with a keen appreciation for the specific challenges of working with prospects who may lack a direct affiliation and/or involvement with Yale Athletics. Knowledge of and proficiency in annual fundraising strategies and techniques. Proven success with individual fundraising.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to donors, volunteers, and colleagues as well as University leadership and students. Professionalism, maturity, good judgment, and ability to foster and work well in a team environment. High level of integrity and ability to exercise confidentiality and discretion.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks and projects with excellent attention to detail. Knowledge of and proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn Yale University databases.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Highly motivated and energetic. Ability to work independently and self motivate.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Strong quantitative skills. Ability to analyze data and implement into solicitation strategies.
