Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking to appoint a new Assistant Coroner to support the Senior and Area coroner across the full range of coroner duties in order to deliver a high-quality coroner service to the people of Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.The South Manchester coroner area includes an area of 336 square kilometres with a current population of around 763,280. In 2023 the number of deaths registered within the area was 6,670 with 2375 cases (36%) referred to the senior coroner. In 2023 827 inquests were held (35%) and 1184 post-mortem examinations (50%). The current average time from date of death to an Inquest being concluded is 22 weeks.Your RoleThe successful candidate will be required to carry out the duties and responsibilities of a coroner as defined in the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and associated rules and regulations and as further described in various guidance issued by the Chief Coroner.About YouThe successful candidate will be a barrister or a solicitor or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and satisfy the judicial-appointment eligibility condition which means they will have 5 years of experience whilst holding that qualification. They will be under the age of 75 and be subject to the appointment and eligibility conditions within the .You will be required to demonstrate knowledge and experience of coroner law and of basic medicine, have proven skills in conducting investigations and an understanding of court procedure. You will also need to demonstrate the excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with sensitive situations.A copy of the application pack is availableAbout UsThe service is located in dedicated accommodation, including offices and court at The Coroners Court, 1 Mount Tabor Street, Stockport, SK1 3AG. The coroner’s court, which is situated with the coroner’s offices, is available Monday- Thursday 8.30am – 4.30pm Friday 8.30am – 4.00pm allowing inquests to be opened quickly with dates set for inquest hearings, usually within the required six months.7 coroner’s officers, and 3 coroner’s clerks are employed by the Local Authority and 7 Police Coroner’s Officers are employed by Greater Manchester Police to support the Coroner.At Stockport Council we are one ambitious team on a mission to create opportunities for everyone who lives, works and spends time in the borough.
