As one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music, the IU Jacobs School of Music (JSoM) plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, and music educators who influence music performance and education around the globe.

The more than 1,600 students who study at the Jacobs School of Music benefit from the intensity and focus of a conservatory combined with the broad academic offerings of a major university.

The essence of a great music school is its faculty, and the more than 180 full-time faculty members in residence at the IU Jacobs School of Music include performers, scholars, and teachers of international renown. In addition, many top musicians and scholars come to the school each year to give master classes and guest lectures or to serve as visiting artistic directors, conductors, and faculty.

The breadth and number of performance opportunities are unparalleled in college music study, with the school offering more than 1,100 performances a year, including up to 7 fully staged operas. The school’s facilities, including 5 buildings located in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus, comprise of outstanding recital halls, more than 170 practice rooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, and more than 100 offices and studios. The grandest facility is the Musical Arts Center, which features technical capabilities that are among the best in the nation.

The Jacobs School of Music invites candidates to serve as Assistant Dean for Artistic Operations (ADAO) and to lead the artistic operations of the school. The ADAO’s portfolio encompasses leadership and direction of all facets of JSoM performance operations, including the Jacobs Opera and Ballet Theater, instrumental ensembles, concerts, performance, ad hoc room scheduling, and events on and off the JSoM campus including occasional tours or regional performances. We are looking for an artistic visionary with an entrepreneurial perspective, and a collaborative colleague who partners with the dean, the administration, faculty, students, professional staff, and collaborative partners both across Indiana University and beyond.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Reports to and serves as an advisor to the Dean and is a key member of the Jacobs School of Music Executive Leadership Cabinet.
• Works closely with faculty artistic advisors, the production and support staff to develop strategies to successfully synergize all performance venues and productions to create a cohesive JSoM performance calendar.
• Responsible for managing the identification of and fee negotiation with guest artistic staff, guest artists, and guest large ensemble conductors.
• Oversees the building of the composite opera theater, ballet, and ensemble performance calendar in consultation with faculty and staff.
• Builds meaningful long-lasting relationships with key figures in the performing arts nationally and internationally.
• Actively pursues strategic partnerships and alliances with other mission-compatible organizations that leverage future expansion of programs, diversity of audiences, and inclusivity of community.
• Coordinates high profile performance events and programs.
• Maintains an awareness of industry trends.
• Develops long-term operational planning including repair and replacement of assets
• Directs reports include the Opera and Ballet Theater Interim Production Manager, the Opera and Ballet Theater Interim Managing Director, the Director of Instrumental Ensembles, the Ticketing, Sales, and House Manager, the Director of Piano Technology, and the Music Scheduling Specialists (a co-report to Academic Affairs.).
• Consults with other internal constituents as required including the opera Director of Coaching and Music Administration, the Resident Stage Director, and Chairs of Conducting, Choral Activities, Ballet, Voice, Organ, Guitar, Harp, and Percussion, among others.

General Responsibilities

• Contributes on senior leadership teams to formulate strategic planning and the highest-level operational objectives for art production areas.
• Establishes long-term business plans and long-term strategic objectives.
• Directs leadership staff who provide supervision to art production teams.
• Responsible for escalated operational issues, including human resources and/or people management situations.
• Drives innovation and excellence within the area of art production; reviews and creates policies and procedures.
• Determines overall budget for art production teams; reviews and approves financial proposals from direct reporting leaders; has significant fiscal responsibilities that require frequent interaction with executive leaders.
• Provides expertise and identifies grant and/or funding opportunities; develops business relationships across the university and externally.
• Stays up-to-date on new art production standards, procedures, technologies, and metrics and works collaboratively with other art production leaders across departments and/or campuses in determining standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures; ensures the adoption and implementation by direct reporting leaders.

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor’s degree in related field

Preferred

• Advanced degree in relevant field including music, dance, arts administration, music business, or a related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 5 years of experience in related field
• 3 years of management experience in related field

Preferred

• 7 years of professional experience in higher education and/or the performing arts

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
