Position description

The Assistant Dean for Maxwell in Washington, D.C. directs a year-round academic program in the nation’s capital. Maxwell in Washington hosts approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students annually for a combination of courses and internships with a diverse set of organizations. This is a 12-month position. The Assistant Dean works with the Dean, the Dean’s executive team, the staff of main campus and D.C., and other stakeholders to oversee the development and implementation of a strategic plan for Maxwell in Washington that aligns with Syracuse University and the Maxwell School’s strategic plans. The Assistant Dean recruits and mentors’ students, creates and nurtures institutional partnerships, develops new programs and initiatives, recruits and retains faculty to teach across all levels of the program, assesses and strengthens curriculum, manages the D.C.-based staff, and promotes Maxwell in D.C. to current and future stakeholders. With the D.C.-based staff and in consultation with staff on main campus as necessary, the Assistant Dean oversees all aspects of the undergraduate student experience in D.C., including academic programming and administration, internship placement, academic and career advising, international student issues, housing, professional development, and health and well-being.

Education and Experience

• Master’s degree in international affairs, public administration, or similar field required, Doctoral degree preferred.
• Higher education teaching and academic administration experience highly desired.

Skills and Knowledge

• Higher education teaching and academic administration experience.
• Understanding of DC policy community.
• Understanding of curriculum development at a University.
• Knowledge of best practices in graduate and undergraduate recruitment and enrollment management
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with partners and colleagues across a complex institutional framework.
• Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the strategic plan for Maxwell in Washington, D.C. Nurture and grow an outstanding student experience for undergraduate and graduate students that emphasizes experiential learning and professional development.
• Supervise and participate in the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students as they take courses, pursue internships, and seek career opportunities.
• Supervise and participate in creating alumni networking, professional development, career guidance, and mentoring opportunities for students at all levels of the program.
• Supervise staff and participate in the practical, day-to-day administration of Maxwell in D.C.’s programs.
• Liaise with D.C. based and main campus staff to achieve strategic goals related to: recruitment; managing relations with internship hosts; academic advising and course registration; career advising; event planning; communications; student housing; information and computing technology; health and well-being; managing program resources and budget; providing monetary grants to students; and cultivating development and alumni relations.
• Oversee the hosting of faculty, alumni, and other visitors from main campus, including the annual Maxwell Advisory Board meeting.
• Build relationships with D.C. policy community: government agencies; foreign embassies; NGOs; trade associations; private sector contractors, etc., as pipelines for student internships, alumni connections, and feeder organizations for Maxwell programs.
• Play key role in Maxwell’s overall outreach in Washington, DC.
• Nurture existing and develop new college/university partnerships; travel to Pittsburgh, Denver, Boston, and Wooster to recruit students/promote the program.
• Recruit, coach, supervise, and retain part-time faculty. Develop and review all aspects of the curriculum for the several programs.
• Supervise DC based staff; review their performance.
• Oversee and review the annual budget (multiple program budgets) for D.C. operations.
• Supervise staff and faculty expenditures. Draft MOUs and terms of reference; oversee billing of partners based on MOU parameters.
• Prepare cost-share allocations and project budgets for institutional partnerships.
• Oversee budgetary aspects of student apartments, including program expenditures to cover unfilled beds.
