Position Overview

Jayhawk Global is an education innovation center at the University of Kansas that advances and delivers flexible forms of learner engagement, including online degree programs, professional and workforce development, certifications, competency-based educational offerings, credit for prior experience, employee training, and enrichment learning.  The Center for Online and Distance Learning (CODL) specializes in instructional design and media innovation.  We serve KU faculty and staff who develop and deliver online and hybrid courses.  Our focus is to facilitate KU’s strategic goals for expanding online learning by providing pedagogy and technology expertise in support of teaching and learning.

The Assistant Director works closely with the CODL Director in planning and implementing a broad range of projects and activities in support of teaching and learning.  In addition, this position is responsible for managing communications between CODL and the campus community; identifying opportunities for faculty professional development offerings; and is a champion and advocate for the student experience, digital accessibility, and effective learning design.

Job Description

  • 40% – Assists the Director in strategic planning and project management of course design services provided to faculty. Stays current with trends and new developments related to CODL’s mission. Represents the Director and CODL in campus conversations and initiatives related to course design, online education, and educational technologies. 
  • 25% – Reviews course templates to ensure consistency and quality across the program portfolio. Uses Quality Matters and learning theories to ensure curriculum and content are designed to engage learners.  Evaluates delivery modality and makes recommendations for changes/improvements as needed.
  • 20% – Creates a strategy for communicating project needs with stakeholders. Manages communications to the campus community regarding CODL activities as well as instructor and course design spotlights.
  • 10% – Designs a process to identify relevant and timely professional development opportunities for faculty in the areas of online teaching, course design, and instructional technologies. Works with instructional design team to develop, implement, and assess trainings and workshops.
  • 5% – Other related duties as assigned by the Director.

Position Requirements

This position is located on the Lawrence campus, and physical presence in the Lawrence office is required on a regular basis. Ability to travel to conferences semi-annually for professional development highly desirable.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, or related field OR Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience
  • Supervisory or mentoring experience of staff and organizational processes.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty or professionals in the design, development, and delivery of quality online instruction.
  • Project management experience demonstrated by successfully implemented projects and initiatives.
  • Experience writing professional communications such as executive reports, contracts, or department newsletters.
  • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with faculty at the University of Kansas.
  • Experience developing and assessing professional development opportunities for faculty.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and utilization of learning theory, online learning strategies, and technology integration.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the Quality Matters rubric.
  • Participation in professional associations and organizations.
