Position Summary

Reporting to and under the supervision of the Director of Operations and Partnerships, the Assistant Director, Communications is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing the Center for Civic Leadership and the RiceVotes Collective’s branding, including voice, graphic elements, and communication strategies across all platforms. The Assistant Director, Communications will also collaborate on developing and implementing curriculum and other program components relevant to communications, marketing, and rhetorical considerations for Center activities. The person in this position will supervise student workers and in developing and implementing communication materials for a range of audiences. The person in this position will also collaborate on running the CCL Ambassadors program, including curriculum development and ensuring ambassadors are contributing to outreach effectively. This person will also be responsible for managing budget projections and reconciliations for merchandise and activities related to branding and marketing. This person will utilize data analytics and other assessment strategies to evaluate and document the effectiveness of communication strategies with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Hiring Salary: $50,000 – $55,000/year – commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3 years experience in communication and civic engagement related activities
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is requested, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
    • Professional experience can include internships, student assistantships, and other relevant activities
  • Skills
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills
    • Good organization and creativity skills
    • Good analytical problem solving skills

Essential Functions

  • Develops and manages the communication and brand strategy for individual program(s) incorporating appropriate channels
  • Recommends, manages, and executes integrated marketing plans / programs and strategies to meet business objectives
  • Guides event planning and execution
  • Manages vendors on specific projects
  • Manages program budget, goals, and objectives in alignment with organizational goals
  • Manages market research and analysis used to make informed decisions regarding strategic marketing direction, product segmentation and customer targeting
  • Assesses market opportunities and tracks market trends
  • Recommends marketing improvements based on findings
  • Writes, designs, and coordinates the production of communication and marketing materials
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Additional Functions

  • Provide creative vision and direction for the CCL and RiceVotes Collective brand, including voice and graphic design, and for engaging diverse audiences
  • Design, develop, and coordinate all written and graphic communications and marketing materials for the CCL, including website, newsletter, print materials, and social media
  • Collaborate with Rice Public Affairs and other campus offices to promote CCL
  • Assess the efficacy of marketing strategies
  • Market CCL programs and events to relevant audiences
  • Support design and development of CCL programs, curriculum, and partnerships that teach CCL foundations and civic practices (ambassadors), leveraging key strengths: communications, marketing, branding
  • Implement and manage programs that teach CCL foundations and civic practices: info sessions, student advising, teaching, curriculum, event planning, partner communications, program assessment and final reports, and program finances
  • Collaborate with operations team in advancing best practices, refining processes, and problem solving to support center wide operations
