Penn State World Campus Student Affairs is in search of a compassionate, student-focused Assistant Director/Coordinator of Student Care and Advocacy. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in providing care, advocacy, and wellness programming to college students across a wide variety of backgrounds, heritages, and identities. This position works solely with online students.

The Assistant Director/Coordinator is responsible for World Campus Care, Advocacy, and Crisis protocol which involves addressing and resolving students concerns and managing the coordination and communication of these concerns with students and other stakeholders before, during, and after student challenges arise. Serving as a vital campus resource, this person provides support to online students experiencing unforeseen challenges during their academic career. The Assistant Director/Coordinator will triage students in non-mental health crisis (basic needs, housing insecurity, food insecurity, death in family, crimes of violence, natural disasters, etc.) helping to clarify and identify their issues, connects them with supportive resources, and works collaboratively with the student to empower their development of an action or care plan.  

The Assistant Director/Coordinator responsibilities include:

  • developing and implementing initiatives, events, programs and services that support student wellness.

  • lead planning and assessment efforts to determine the effectiveness of student wellness programs.

  • serving as a point of contact and providing consultation for students, faculty and staff who are seeking guidance and advice about how to assist students experiencing distress.

  • assisting students in navigating University and/or community resources and services.

  • following up with and tracking students in distress to monitor progress and to encourage follow through with recommendations.

  • completing documentation and maintaining records of student cases in online case management systems.

  • providing leadership for and participating in departmental, campus, and university committees.

  • serving as an advisor or co-advisor for a student organization.

Additional Position Information: Work will be primarily performed remotely with some monthly in-person meetings and/or student events that will require travel to University Park, PA. Work hours will vary based on student need and events which may include periodic evenings and/or weekends.

Education: Bachelor’s degree required with at least three years of related experience; preferred: Master’s degree preferred in counselor education, social work, human development and family science, or related field with at least one year of related experience.

Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • a collaborative, compassionate leader who inspires confidence and trust

  • understanding of intersecting identities that include, but are not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, and socio-economic status

  • experience working with students in a higher education setting

  • project management experience

  • ability to manage difficult and complex situations

  • current knowledge of principles/practices in case management

  • ability to work cooperatively with others within a multidisciplinary team environment, evidence of effective collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff

  • experience developing student support services, programs, and assessment

  • ability to inspire and nurture a climate of inclusiveness, collegiality, and shared responsibility
