Assistant Director Development, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’
focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a
national and global leader in higher education. We create and
foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and
philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine;
strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors,
alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and
patients.

 

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which
includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid
work arrangement with an onsite presence of 2-3 days per week. The
manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the
majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who
travel on university business can count those days towards their
onsite days.

 

The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a gift
officer to join our team in support of our fundraising goals and
objectives. The Assistant Director of Development is an integral
member of the School’s External Affairs team in securing
philanthropic support for the Krieger School in pursuit of the
mission of education, research, and discovery. Our team is
dedicated to connecting the passions of our donors to the needs of
the School in realizing our mission.

 
While interaction with constituents at all stages in
the development cycle will occur, the Assistant Director will
primarily focus on the discovery and qualification of prospects
within the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. The position will
craft, execute, and manage a strategic plan to build a pool of
potential leadership-level pipeline donors for the School. This
involves prospect research and analysis, developing effective
engagement strategies as well as collaboration and partnership with
the Krieger School gift officers, constituent engagement team, and
central Homewood Schools teams.
 

The Assistant Director of Development will maintain a donor
portfolio with a focus on pipeline and discovery prospects. This
work will be supplemented by special projects and/or embedded
assignments with colleagues that add value and expand the capacity
of the team. The position will not carry a designated territory,
but rather will be open to all Krieger School discovery prospects
in the United States; as such, an ability and willingness to travel
domestically is essential.

 

This role is ideal for those advancement professionals
interested in gaining or sharpening development competencies and
frontline fundraising skills with a variety of different
constituency groups.

 

• Create and execute a robust discovery strategic plan that
  establishes processes and procedures to identify and qualify new
  potential prospects to build a pool for the Krieger School
  development team;
• Conduct a minimum of 12-15 discovery outreaches per month to
  meet a goal of 150 visits per year; develop, direct, and implement
  pre-qualification strategies for leadership annual giving and major
  gift prospects through discovery calls, personal visits, virtual
  engagement, and email;
• Build and manage a portfolio of leadership annual, major, and
  planned gift prospects with a focus on leadership-level discovery
  across the United States;
• Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation
  with KSAS leadership;
• Leverage and utilize the JHAS constituent management database
  and other relevant systems to create a process for identifying and
  tracking discovery and pipeline prospects within KSAS;
• Identify and evaluate giving potential of leadership annual,
  major, and planned gift prospects/donors through personal visits
  and engagement in the philanthropic priorities that advance the
  School’s mission. Effectively plan and execute gift strategies to
  cultivate, solicit, and steward such prospects;
• Prepare gift proposals, solicitation letters, and other
  cultivation and presentation materials for select donors;
• Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with
  development and departmental representatives in areas across the
  institution with particular focus and collaboration with the
  Krieger School gift officers and constituent engagement team, as
  well as the central Hopkins Fund, JHTV, and alumni relations teams,
  among others;
• Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to support,
  ensure event attendance as well as recruit key volunteers who could
  assist in the School’s advancement efforts (i.e., mentoring, panel
  presentation, lectures, etc.). Attend events for strategic
  prospect/discovery purposes;
• Serve as a liaison with select academic departments, centers
  and programs. Work with the chair or director to determine
  fundraising opportunities for the department, center, or program.
  Develop and maintain excellent relationships with faculty leaders
  and department chairs in support of KSAS priorities.
• Serve as an integral part of the School of Arts and Sciences
  team with the Associate Dean, Senior Director of Development,
  Director of Constituent Engagement and others; participate in
  external affairs office meetings and retreats.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Two years related experience
• Additional graduate level education may substitute for required
  experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency
  formula

Preferred Qualifications

• Fast-paced, highly variable, and entrepreneurial; this role is
  best suited for an individual with deft interpersonal skills and
  collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity,
  intellectual curiosity, a service mindset, and a keen interest in
  advancing the mission of one of the world’s great research
  universities.
• Strong data management and data analytics skills to effectively
  manage discovery plan using the JHAS constituent management
  database, Microsoft Office suite, and other systems. Experience
  with Salesforce platform is preferred, but not required.
• Keen project management skills to determine priorities and
  manage multiple projects at once.
• Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills;
  demonstrated effective writing skills.
• Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, and
  fast-paced organization.
• Ability and willingness to travel throughout the United States
  for discovery meeting, events, and other KSAS and JHU
  activities.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to
  travel.
• Must live within commuting distance to the Homewood campus in
  Baltimore and able to work on-campus 2+ days per week and remotely,
  effectively balancing the time.
