Position Summary
The Assistant Director is responsible for advising instructors and departments in effective use of technologies in teaching and learning. This position will support faculty, postdocs, and graduate students in implementing effective and innovative uses of technology in their pedagogy that advance the teaching and learning mission of Washington University.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Works in collaboration with CTL’s Educational Development staff to develop and deliver effective, evidence-based programming focused on educational technology that supports the teaching and learning mission of the university. Collaborates with Classroom Services on technology-related programming; informs design and management of educational technologies used in and out of classrooms.
- Supports the development, establishment, and evaluation of university-wide teaching initiatives with evidence-based recommendations.
- Collaborates with campus partners and serve on university committees to advise on technologies.
- Collaborates with schools and departments across the university concerning educational technology initiatives.
- Researches, develops, and provides centralized training and customizable resources on best practices for using technology in teaching. Analyzes data to identify effective usages of EdTech tools in teaching.
- Provides training, consultations and pedagogic support for the use of the university-supported learning management system, video conferencing platforms, and other university-supported EdTech tools. Plans, creates, and disseminates training resources using multimedia authoring tools.
- Engages in professional development and conducts research, presents, or publishes on best practices in implementing EdTech in college teaching and effective and innovative practices for supporting faculty in teaching with technologies. Continues personal professional development and growth in the areas of technology-based education, including staying current with educational trends by attending webinars and conferences.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree and at least five years of experience in higher education.
- Doctoral Degree and teaching experience as a faculty member in higher education.
- Experience conducting pedagogically-based faculty development training .
- Experience designing and delivering educational development programming, specifically in higher education.
- Teaching experience as a faculty or staff member (part-time) in the higher education environment.
- Formal training in instructional design.
- Experience teaching with Learning Management Systems and video conferencing platforms.
- Experience working with faculty to develop effective digital learning strategies for a variety of courses.
- Competency in creating video-based and written pedagogical guidance resources.
- Experience in a research university.
- Expertise in inclusive course design and instructional practices.
- Record of engagement with academic community that supports educational technology.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible language for diverse audiences.
- Understanding of current and emerging technologies to advance collaboration, exploration, and discovery across academic disciplines, with significant experience leveraging these opportunities for practical and measurable gains in teaching and learning.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards and UDL principles as they pertain to teaching and learning.
- Demonstrated record of developing and managing teaching and learning technology services for a diverse community of learners.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments, fostering relationships with faculty, students, administrators, and technical teams.
- Experience with lecture capture, assessment platforms, data analytics, and survey technologies.
- Knowledge of instructional design methodologies.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in relevant field and two years of related experience or Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and four years of related experience.

Salary Range
$57,300.00 – $97,700.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
