Job Description:

The assistant director is integral to the successful planning and implementation of global programs and student travel for all of Ohio University.
The assistant director will lead university efforts to offer systematic and robust support and resources to student travel opportunities. Efforts of the position will be focused on meeting the increasing and evolving duty of care expectations to student travel, including security, health, safety, and risk management and mitigation efforts for the Office of Global Opportunities (OGO). This position is responsible for chairing the Study Away Risk Assessment Committee (SARAC), providing risk management training, and monitoring and assessing compliance with risk management policies, procedures and best practices in the field. The assistant director will also share responsibility of being on-call for emergency response after business hours with the director and associate director.
Job Responsibilities Include:

Oversight and Leadership:

  • Leadership– Lead duty of care security, health, safety, and risk management and mitigation efforts for OHIO students related to international and domestic off-campus travel activities such as study, intern, research, and volunteer. Provide guidance on best practices of risk mitigation and emergency response serving as a resource to university stakeholders.

  • Policy Development and Management- Support development of university and departmental policies to help mitigate risk. Monitor and assess compliance with risk management policies and procedures pertaining to student study abroad and away, including university student travel policy 22.001.

  • Risk Assessment and Review– Monitor destinations of OHIO student travel for health, security and other travel-related threats. Confer with multiple security resources for up-to-date information. Compile reports for said travel destinations and provide recommendations to Provost or academic leadership regarding student travel. As needed, monitor and address new or ongoing risk and emergencies. Chair the Study Away Risk Assessment Committee (SARAC).

  • International Insurance Contract Management- Manage ongoing relationship with international health insurance provider.
    • Ensure updated annual contract and conduct competitive bid process, as required by finance policy.
    • Ensure proper record keeping for annual insurance rate reviews.
    • Maintain regular communications with insurance provider including but not limited to benchmarking queries, incident and/or claims follow up, and coverage inquiries.

Proactive response:

  • Program PreparationEnsure that programs have appropriate emergency response plans in place prior to departure.

  • Outreach and Trainings Oversee the security, health, safety, and risk management training process for student travel.
    • Create/update training materials for students and program staff regularly.
    • Host training seminars for study abroad and away program directors.
    • Ensure that information is shared with university stakeholders regularly and in advance of travel.
    • Ensure that student travelers have access to information prior to travel.
    • Outreach and communication to departments and constituencies across campus to share process, procedure, and resources.

  • Collaboration-Collaborate with multiple units to ensure a broad network of support for risk mitigation and incident response, including Dean of Students’ Office, Risk Management and Insurance, Counseling and Psychological Services, Equity and Civil Rights Compliance, Legal Affairs, Finance, and Community Standards and Student Responsibility. Provide resources and collaborate with academic and departmental leadership, directors of off-campus mobility programs, Center for International Business and Education Development (CIBED), Global Health Initiative (GHI), and any OHIO and HCOM staff members who are responsible for or sponsor student travel


Incident Response:

  • Emergency response- Ensure proper response to incidents as they arise.
    • Review and update OGO emergency response procedures annually. Ensure that response team is properly trained and prepared to respond to incidents.
    • Shared responsibility for after-hours emergency phone line for onsite emergency response.
  • Student behavioral issues Liaison between faculty, students, families, onsite staff, providers, and Community Standards and Student Responsibility. Respond to student behavioral issues that arise onsite. Serve as resource to faculty directors providing guidance on university policy and student development theory. Connect faculty onsite to university subject matter experts, as needed.

Reporting, Clery compliance, Duty of Care:

  • Reporting Maintain an incident reporting database of all issues as they arise during student travel. Ensure proper record-keeping and information collection to provide annual report data such as Clery Act and State Authorization compliance.
  • Tracking- Oversee the implementation and utilization of travel tracking software system.
    • Monitor and assess compliance with travel registration student policy (22.001). Provide regular reports to college leadership regarding student travel in their units.
    • Monitor risk levels in student travel destinations and send informational updates or alerts to travelers as necessary.
    • Manage emergency check in process as needed during crisis. Share results with university stakeholders.

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory or managerial experience

*An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Advertised Salary:

The target salary range is $51,281 to $67,947 commensurate with the selected candidate’s education and experience while considering internal equity.
