Description of Work Unit Consistent with Colorado State University’s land grant mission to make education accessible to all persons and groups, the Access Center develops the talents of those who have been historically underrepresented in postsecondary education (first generation, low-income, ethnically and racially diverse, and non-traditionally aged). By utilizing effective practices, we provide quality services to communities, individuals and institutions resulting in student success and exemplary programs guided by an ethic of community and project accountability.
The Assistant Director for the Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) program in the Access Center is responsible for supervision, program planning and management, and academic program development. The Assistant Director of UBMS reports to the Director of Upward Bound programs and assists with administrative and leadership support in the implementation of the mission and goals of Upward Bound Math Science and the Access Center.
Upward Bound Math Science is a federally funded TRIO program, is designed to assist high school students from first generation and low-income backgrounds to complete secondary school and enter postsecondary education programs.
Further, the Upward Bound Math and Science program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.
Program services include group and individual counseling, academic advising and support, intensive math and science training, exposure to faculty members with math and science specialty, and scientific research studies. Program services also include career and educational opportunities, and personal enrichment events. The program serves 60 students in the Loveland area.
The Assistant Director will be a full-time Administrative-Professional university appointment. This position requires a varied work schedule that includes evening and weekends, summer, and requires substantial travel. The Assistant Director must maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License or have access to a licensed driver. The university will conduct a criminal and motor vehicle background check on final candidates.
Position Summary Provide insight and direction in program oversight and implementation in line with federal and state regulations as well as institutional guidelines.
Hire, train and supervise program staff, including advisor(s) and student staff, provide ongoing support and feedback, and conduct performance evaluations.
Assist with budget oversight and grant expenditures in line with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.
Provide leadership in developing counseling plans, academic curriculum, student events and trips, and summer pre-collegiate programs.
Maintain student caseload of UBMS program participants.
Develop and coordinate the implementation of a recruitment plan for 60 participants.
Administer the travel, insurance, and purchasing functions of the program, and provide assistance in the development and administration of the budget.
Monitor the progress toward accomplishment of program objectives and oversee documentation of all aspects of project activity.
Assist in compiling data and write reports documenting program outcomes and accomplishments for U.S. Department of Education, the University, and the community
Provide counseling, assessment, information, workshops, and enrichment events for students, and carry out the responsibilities of a project counselor in relation to these participants when necessary.
Develop and maintain relationships between the program and the community, including schools, postsecondary institutions, and other public and private community organizations and institutions.
Provide leadership in planning for training and professional development activities for the organization, and participate fully in such activities
Develop and maintain a network of educational and career resources for the benefit of the program and participants.
Attend state, regional, and national TRIO conferences for the betterment of the UBMS program
Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Required Job Qualifications Bachelor’s degree: Math, Science, Technology, education, or other related subject area at time of applying.
Three years of experience working with youth in a TRIO or other related pre-collegiate programs, where interacting with secondary and postsecondary institutions and students was central to the role.
Preferred Job Qualifications Master’s degree in STEM related field, education, student personnel, higher education, counseling or related field
Demonstrated commitment and experience working with underrepresented, ethnically diverse, and disadvantaged individuals (“Disadvantaged,” according to the U.S. Department of Education, signifies an individual who meets low-income guidelines and who is a potential first-generation college student. A “first generation” individual is a person whose parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree).
Experience supervising staff (interns, tutors, counselors, volunteers)
Strong communication skills, including writing, speaking, and use of computer applications.
Bilingual ability desirable (English/ Spanish).
