Offer Description
The Department of Media and Culture Studies is seeking an assistant professor with a profile in Music and Media. We are looking for candidates who can contribute to the research, teaching and public engagement of the department from a specialisation in music and media. You should have a strong profile in the field of media theory and history, European cinema, psychology of audiovisual analysis and/or complementary expertise.
Your job
As Assistant Professor in Music and Media, you will teach in the BA Muziekwetenschap (Dutch), the MA Applied Musicology (English) and/or RMA Musicology (English).
Our 3-year undergraduate programme in Musicology focuses on Western music from the Middle Ages to the present (track ‘Historical Musicology’), and on the impact of (digital) media on the production, reception and distribution of music (track ‘Music and Media’). The one-year Applied Musicology graduate programme focuses specifically on the music industry, while the two-year Research MA Musicology focuses more on musicological research.
Ideally, you are also be able to teach in other programmes of the department (e.g. BA Media en Cultuur; MA Film and Television Cultures) and in interdisciplinary contexts within and beyond the Faculty of Humanities. Administrative and/or managerial tasks may be part of the job.

Ideally, you:
- enjoy being part of a team and are open to collaborating in various contexts, sharing knowledge and experiences, and contributing to an open, inclusive, and collegial atmosphere;
- are able to convey your knowledge to students, researchers, and professionals in an enthusiastic manner;
- are an internationally active researcher in music and media, and have completed a PhD in a field relevant to the position;
- publish regularly in academic journals and book publications;
- are an experienced and dedicated teacher and supervisor;
- have an international network in academia and beyond, especially in the professional field of music or media, and are able to engage this network in the development of innovative research projects;
- have excellent communication skills and are capable of inspiring a positive team spirit;
- are willing to take on managerial responsibilities at diverse levels of our department and faculty.
Moreover:
- you have a strong command of the English language, and preferably also the Dutch language at level C1 . This is relevant because we offer courses in both languages, and because we work with an international group of students and staff. We can assist in reaching the appropriate language level;
- if you do not yet have a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ, in Dutch: Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs, BKO), you will obtain this in the first two years of your appointment.

We offer:
- an employment contract for 12 months with the prospect of a permanent employment contract;
- a working week of 38 hours and a gross monthly salary between € 4.332,- and € 5.929,- in the case of full-time employment (salary scale 11 under the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU);
- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus;
- a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment based on the CAO NU.
The job’s allocation is set to 40% research and 60% teaching. Within the 60% for teaching, there is 10% free space that will not be scheduled.
