The School of Biosciences and the Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Nottingham invite applications for the post of Assistant Professor in Soil Science.
The role is to support teaching and advance research in the area of soil sciences especially soil biophysics currently undertaken within the Environmental Science group as part of the School of Biosciences. The Division of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (AES) is the focus for teaching of undergraduate and MSci courses in Environmental Science, Environmental Biology and Agricultural Science. The successful candidate will be based within AES and expected to deliver modular teaching in the area of sustainable soil science and support the ongoing research in the area of Soil Science. Applicants with expertise in soil physics, soil biology, soil health and soil structure are particularly welcome. An understanding of the application of X-ray Computed Tomography to soil and plant sciences would be advantageous. This post will provide cover for the teaching and research activities of Professor Sacha Mooney currently seconded to a Head of School position.
This post would involve lecturing, running seminars, leading field days and external visits, conducting assessments, devising and overseeing student projects and giving pastoral care to our students. The ability to design, plan and deliver high quality teaching is essential.
Supporting the ongoing research to achieve their aims is essential. This would involve; supervising and managing research students and researchers, presenting and interpreting outcomes and findings and engaging outside the university.
The job involves demonstrating high level interpersonal skills with people from all over the world; working within the university’s regulations and governance in relation to teaching; and to get up to speed with our systems.
The successful candidate will need to be flexible and might be expected to teach outside of their research area, as well as making a wider contribution to the School and University as a whole. Therefore, they need to be collegiate, involving themselves in additional activities, working in a team to deliver projects and taking opportunities to represent the School.
The role is based at the Sutton Bonington Campus within the School of Biosciences while the majority of teaching will be at the University Park Campus. Further information about the School is available at: www.nottingham.ac.uk/biosciences .
Candidates should have a PhD in Soil Science, Plant Science, Agriculture or a closely related discipline and proven ability to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in relevant subjects. Excellent English Language oral and written communication and presentation skills are essential. A postgraduate teaching qualification would be desirable. The successful applicant will have evidence of high-quality publications in academic journals in a relevant subject area suitable for submission to the Research Excellence Framework, the ability to develop their own research area and flexibility to collaborate with colleagues.
This is a part time role (21.75 hours), available on a permanent with underlying funding contract until 31/12/2028.
