Assistant Professor of Design Anthropology

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Anthropology or Applied Anthropology. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2024.
  • Expertise in how the design, implementation, ethics and regulation of new technologies and products impact human organizations, consumers, communities and/or environments
  • Expertise in User Experience Design (UX), Human Centered Design, Artificial Intelligence, Metaverse, Virtual Reality, and/or Augmented Reality or related emergent technologies, products or experiences
  • Familiarity and/or experience with industry collaboration with professionals, their clients and other community members in all aspects of the design process.
  • Demonstrated potential for research productivity
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population

Preferred Qualifications

  • A track record of integrating principles from the field of Design in addressing the traditional concerns of Applied Anthropology in multidisciplinary teams
  • Well-versed in ethnographic research, anthropological theory, methodologies and practices.
  • Demonstrated potential to involve students in their field research and/or creative projects and connecting our department to the field of Design
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses such as Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, Applied Anthropology, New Media Ethnography, Professional Development in Anthropology, Foundations of Anthropology, and graduate seminars vis-à-vis theory and methods
  • Demonstrate a commitment to scholarly excellence and will serve on appropriate departmental, college and university committees
  • Demonstrated potential to contribute to the program and form interdisciplinary partnerships
  • Experience and passion for teaching and working with colleagues and students from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, gender, disability, and academic backgrounds
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body (Demographics)

Duties:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses including field school courses [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
  • Serve on thesis committees
  • Develop and sustain research, scholarly and creative activities leading to publication and presentations
  • Establish interdisciplinary research partnerships
  • Participate in service to the department, college, and university
  • Collaborate with faculty to further the goals of the Anthropology Department
  • Participate in regional and national anthropology organizations

The Department of Anthropology at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is a four-field department dedicated to student learning and creating opportunities for hands-on, real life research experiences that advance career and graduate school opportunities. Digital Humanities and Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts

A growing community of digital humanities and social science scholars in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA). The CLA is the largest college at CSULB, and it is home to more than 30 academic programs and degree options. Four CLA departments-Anthropology, Comparative World Literature, Journalism and Public Relations, and Sociology-will hire new faculty with digital expertise in Fall 2024. The dean has made it a strategic priority to ensure these new tenure-track colleagues can connect with each other as well as with faculty from other disciplines who are dedicated to digital scholarly and creative activities.
