Job Summary:

The Marist College Education Department seeks candidates for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Literacy Education to begin in Fall 2024.

Minimum Qualifications:

We welcome candidates with expertise in Literacy Education who are passionate about preparing teacher candidates.

The position requires:

  • A doctorate in Reading/Literacy Education or related field such as Elementary Education, Childhood Education; by the fall of 2024
  • Certification in Literacy (Reading K-12)
  • Experience as a reading or literacy specialist in a PK-12 school
  • Comfort with educational technology
  • Positive and collaborative team member
  • Experience with curriculum literacy and development
  • Prior experience teaching at the college level
  • Proven success for accomplishment in scholarship that is commensurate with the tenure expectations of the college committed to a “teacher-scholar” model
  • Ability to model culturally responsive and sustainable pedagogical approaches across all courses and foster an inclusive classroom environment

We are excited to announce the opening in fall of 2024 of the fully renovated Dyson building which will include a state-of-the art STEM/Teaching Methods classroom with adjoining Maker Space. 

Essential Functions:

Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in P – 12 education methods and literacy instruction. Supervision and assessment of teacher candidates may also be included. Applicants should have an active research agenda that leads to high-quality peer reviewed publications and the ability to mentor student projects. Also responsible for advisement of teacher candidates and participation as part of a departmental team engaged in continuous improvement efforts. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional Certification in Students with Disabilities or childhood grades 1-6
  • Experience working with diverse and marginalized communities in K-12 settings
  • Committed to the mission of the college with an emphasis on DEI and social justice
  • Experience developing PK-12 partnerships
  • Knowledge of the International Literacy Association (ILA) Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals
  • Participation in professional education associations (such as AACTE, AERA) and/or literacy education associations (such as IDA, ILA, or their affiliate organizations)
  • A student-centered approach in guiding the next generation of teachers

  • 403(b) Tax Deferred Annuity – Roth option available. Voluntary, up to IRS maximum contribution.
  • Tuition Benefits:
    • Up to 16 undergraduate credits per semester. Up to 18 graduate credit per academic calendar. Eligibility extends to employee, spouse, and dependent children under age 26.
    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

*Eligibility requirements including waiting periods and/or employee probationary periods may apply at the discretion of the College.

About the Department/School:

The Education Department is a member of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences along with departments for psychology, criminal justice, and social work. The Education Department offers a variety of teacher preparation programs including: (1) elementary education, grades 1-6, with dual certification for students with disabilities (2) a birth through second grade add-on teacher certification, and (3) adolescence education, grades 7 – 12, with dual certification for students with disabilities in eight content areas (English, math, social studies, biology, chemistry, earth science, Spanish, and French). The department also offers two master’s level degrees: Masters of Arts in Teaching and MS in Education, Contemporary Curriculum & Instruction.

The Education Department and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences are committed to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive climate.
