The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in the field of fatigue and pain as per 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position for two years.

Department of Clinical Medicine

As an Assistant Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. The department has overall responsibility for the Master’s degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 670 academic employees, 500 PhD students and 160 technical/administrative employees who are cooperating across disciplines. Your job responsibilities

As Assistant Professor of pain and fatigue your primary tasks will be research and research-based teaching. You will teach and supervise students at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, and you will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with both Danish and international colleagues. The position of Assistant Professor is a career development position in which you will receive supervision and pedagogical upgrading.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Independent research of high international quality, including publication.
  • Teaching, guidance and examination of Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students, as well as possibly supervision of PhD students.
  • Some degree of contribution towards attracting external research funding.
  • Initiate and complete new clinical trial of Intermittent Hypoxic Treatment in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and new study of mitochondrial dysfunction in fatigue and pain.
  • Complete the studies in the ongoing EU-IMI PainCare and MitoPain projects.
  • Initiate new studies in the area of mechanistic pain research with focus on molecular mechanisms, neuro-immune interactions within fibroblasts and mitochondrial dysfunction and apply for continued external funding.

You will be affiliated with The Research Unit for Molecular Medicine (Associate Professor Rikke Katrine Jentoft Olsen), and collaborate with The Danish Pain Research Center (Professor Nanna Finnerup). You will report to Associate Professor Rikke Katrine Jentoft Olsen, Research Unit for Molecular Medicine.

Your competences

You have independent research-related qualifications at a high international level. You are a clear communicator and you have some degree of experience of supervision and teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s degree level. We draw attention to completed pedagogical courses in supervision or similar, as well as experience with the establishment of PhD courses and external research collaborations. You should have a solid background in cell culture models, and molecular mitochondria research, including bioenergetics and metabolic OMIC studies. Experience with clinical trials, with the PainCare studies (incl. the threshold tracking technique), and neuro-immune interactions in fibroblasts will also be a plus.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are inclusive and team-oriented and able to contribute to a good work environment.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.
