The University of Montana Western invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing August 1, 2025. Applicants should have a specialization within the broader content field of Political Philosophy, regardless of which discipline or program conferred their degree. Applicants must show evidence of the ability and commitment to integrate popular culture media into their courses, many of which are part of the Popular Culture Studies minor. The successful applicant will serve as Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Studies, working with the Director to manage the Interdisciplinary Studies major and its constituent minors. Other duties include student advising, scholarly activity, participation in campus committees, assisting with student recruitment, attending faculty meetings, and other normal faculty duties. 

Required qualifications

  • Doctorate in political philosophy (whether from a philosophy or a politics program)
  • Demonstrated excellence in postsecondary teaching
  • Ability to teach introductory courses in philosophy (both logic and rhetoric), political ethics, and political philosophy
  • Ability to teach introductory courses in government
  • Ability to teach introductory courses and upper-level courses in the applicant’s areas of specialization
  • Ability to teach upper-level courses in law (American Constitutional Law, Comparative Legal Systems, and/or International Law)
  • Integration of popular culture media studies into many of these courses
  • Ability to serve as Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Studies

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching the subjects listed (highly preferred)
  • Ability to teach Classics courses (highly preferred)
  • Ability to teach courses in other areas within the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (18 graduate credits in an outside area, highly preferred)
  • Experience in online course delivery
