Position description
The Department of Political Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for a full-time tenure track position in International Relations to begin August 1, 2025. Appointment is at the Assistant Professor level. While the department seeks a scholar broadly trained in theories of international politics and will review applications from all specializations, it has a preference for candidates who can enhance our disciplinary presence in areas such as security policy (e.g. political violence, terrorism, or civil war), foreign policy, or international political economy. Candidates who can contribute to a new College-wide, inter-disciplinary research and hiring initiative on societal resilience to climate change (SoReCC), climate-related disasters, and the politics of climate change will also be preferred. With societies now experiencing acute effects of rapid climate change, including environmental degradation, changes in global migration patterns, and political conflicts among nation-states and non-state actors, public and expert attention is increasingly shifting towards developing societal capabilities for disaster preparedness, prevention, mitigation, and resilience. Positions added in the SoReCC strategic focus area will leverage the college’s existing instructional and research strength in disciplines and transdisciplinary areas that speak to questions of climate change and societal resilience. The successful candidate must have strong research skills and a theoretically oriented research agenda that will lead to publications in peer-reviewed outlets (journals and/or books). Candidates should also have strong methodological skills. Ability to contribute to the department’s methods sequence would be highly desirable. Preference will be shown for applicants who have research and teaching interests that complement existing departmental interests and strengths, have a capacity for attracting extramural funding, and demonstrate evidence of or potential for college/university teaching excellence, and exhibit a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the accessibility and intercultural goals of the University. The position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Qualifications
All the requirements for a Ph.D. in political science, public policy, or related discipline must be finished at the time of appointment.
