Offer Description
The University of Groningen invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Speech Technology. This role is pivotal in our MSc Voice Technology (https://www.rug.nl/masters/voice-technology/?lang=en ) program, the only dedicated program of its kind globally, which emphasizes voice synthesis and speech recognition.
We are looking for candidates who can teach Speech Synthesis II and Speech Recognition I, and Introduction to Voice Technology to students of diverse, non-technical backgrounds. The candidate should also be eager to supervise thesis research. We are looking for someone who enjoys teaching and can inspire students from different backgrounds to learn through engaging approaches like flipped classrooms, integrating hands-on activities, and exploring new ways to encourage students to engage with course content.
Responsibilities:
– develop and teach graduate-level courses, specifically in Speech Synthesis II and Speech Recognition I, alongside introductory courses in Voice Technology
– facilitate a broad understanding of speech technology for students with diverse and non-technical backgrounds
– engage in the co-supervision of master’s theses and contribute to the mentorship of students in the MSc Voice Technology program
– collaborate with faculty and PhD researchers to enhance our curriculum and research in speech technology, employing innovative teaching methods such as flipped classrooms and hands-on activities.

Requirements
Specific Requirements
– a doctoral degree in a field relevant to speech technology, with strong technical skills, including proficiency in Python
– demonstrated experience in teaching at the tertiary level
– a broad scientific interest in speech technology, with a commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative teaching and research approaches
– excellent command of the English language, including excellent communication and team-working skills
– command of the Dutch Language at CEFR B2-level or prepared to obtain this
– in possession of a University Teaching Qualification or prepared to obtain this.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
– a minimum salary, depending on qualifications and experience of € 4,332 (scale 11.0, assistant professor 2) up to a maximum of € 5,929 (scale 11.max, assistant professor 2) gross a month on a full-time basis (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities)
– a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
– an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
Ideally, a candidate would start in August 2024 so that there is time to engage with the team, review the syllabi, and prepare to hit the ground running in September.
The position has a 60-40 percent distribution with regard to teaching-research.
The appointment will be made for an initial fixed term period of 18 months, with the possibility for a permanent appointment upon positive evaluation and student numbers.
