We are recruiting an assistant professor in coral biophotonics to work on project funded by the Villum Foundation, “CORALS – New strategies for harvesting solar energy using coral-inspired microgeometry”.

The position is open from 1 February 2024or as soon as possible thereafter, and is limited to a 2-year period.

The project work involves detailed studies of the optical properties of reef-building corals, which involve experimental measurements of coral structure and light fields (e.g. with fiber-optic microprobes, optical coherence tomography, CT scanning and hyperspectral imaging), as well as the development and application of numerical simulation tools to model radiative transfer in coral tissue and skeleton.

The candidate should thus have demonstrated experience with biophotonic studies of corals, both via experimental measurements of light fields and chemical parameters, as well as via experience with numerical modeling of radiative transfer in corals.

The projects encompasses a close collaboration with a project partner at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The daily work place will be at the Marine Biology Section’s facilities in Helsingør, but periods of joint work at DTU are also planned.

The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and some research-based teaching. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
