Position description

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, seeks a full-time, calendar year, Assistant Research Professor for the Eagleton Institute of Politics’ Center for Youth Political Participation (CYPP). 

The Assistant Research Professor will continue to advance the work of the Center while also conducting their own research and teaching. In this role, the Assistant Research Professor will direct CYPP’s educational and public service efforts to meet its mission to advance the political learning of high school and college students and civic action among young adults, including those holding and running for office. The candidate will direct the administration of all aspects of the Program, including:

  • RU Ready– a civic engagement initiative designed to provide high school students with the tools and encouragement to be civically and politically engaged in their communities.
  • RU Voting– a project focused upon engaging Rutgers students in local, state, and national elections that serves as a model for other colleges and universities.
  • The Young Elected Leaders Project & RU Running – research regarding young adults holding office and a campaign training for college students. 

Reporting to the Institute’s director, the Assistant Research Professor will have the following key duties:

  • Developing and managing all aspects of the Center for Youth Political Participation including but not limited to:

 o day-to-day direction such as strategic planning, operational planning, assessment and evaluation, communication, events.

 o overseeing CYPP’s program manager who is responsible for managing RU Voting, RU Ready, and the Rutgers-Eagleton Washington Internship Award.

 o drafting and overseeing the Center’s budget.

 o developing and maintaining productive relationships with various public and private institutions and stakeholders as well as donors, supporters, and alumni.

  • Teaching the “Topics in Political Science Course: the Darien Civic Engagement Project” (fall and spring) and working with the program manager to recruit students for the course.
  • At the request of the director, teaching additional courses as needed and requested.
  • Obtaining external funding to maintain and build the Center by identifying and writing grant applications, preparing promotional documents, identifying and cultivating donors.
  • Expanding on the Center’s current research agenda and seeking ways to link the study of teaching youth political participation with the practice.
  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities to expand the Center across the University and even beyond the University, which may include developing a research agenda or producing academic content.

Position Status: Full Time

Minimum Education and Experience

Ph.D. in political science or closely related field or J.D. Academic experience in higher education and program management strongly preferred. Professional experience with issues related to youth political participation and civic engagement strongly preferred as well as a demonstrated knowledge of state and national political and electoral systems.

* Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communications skills.
* Pedagogical experience and a mindset for pedagogical growth and advancement.
* Efficient and detail-oriented.
* Strong interpersonal skills and comfort meeting and working with a broad range of people – from high-level public officials to faculty to students.
* Ability to independently manage multiple tasks and short deadlines in high-stress situations.
* Prior success in collaborating on complex projects with multidisciplinary stakeholders.
* Comfortable working for an organization that is political yet non-partisan and straddles the worlds of politics and academia.
* Advanced understanding of American politics in general and New Jersey politics and government specifically, whether through coursework, professional experience, or personal involvement.
* Experience in grant writing and institutional fundraising as well as program development.
* Event planning experience.
* Organizational social media management or communication proficiency.
