Assistant Warden – Frampton Marsh & Freiston Shore

We are recruiting for an Assistant Warden to support the warden team with the annual work
programme at Frampton Marsh and Freiston shore, working on a range of habitats including
coastal saltmarsh, lowland wet grassland, freshwater scrapes, reedbed, saline lagoon and a soon
to be created regulated tidal exchange.

Based out of the office at Frampton Marsh, you will deliver infrastructure maintenance and
repairs and biological surveys. You will assist with the management of two weekly work parties,
working closely with and managing volunteers and interns and ensuring everyone works safely and
in accordance with risk assessments. You will help to implement and update health and safety
records, and quality assurance inspections across both reserves. You will also support the
visitor operations and café teams when required. 

Blessed with a variety of freshwater habitats, Frampton Marsh & Freiston Shore nature
reserves near Boston, Lincolnshire provide close views of the abundant birdlife of The Wash,
one of Europe’s most special places for wildlife. Frampton Marsh has more breeding waders (ca.
500 pairs) than any other RSPB nature reserve in England, along with tens of thousands of
wintering waterbirds. Freiston Shore has an exciting future ahead of it thanks to a £2.5M
development grant which has just been secured. 

This is a fabulous opportunity to be part of an ambitious team helping to deliver highly
functioning dynamic wetland management at Frampton Marsh and Freiston Shore to provide homes
for nationally significant populations of breeding and wintering waders and wildfowl.

You will be a crucial member of a team consisting of ca.100 volunteers and 19 paid staff,
including a Defra funded project team for the ‘Lincolnshire Wash Landscape Recovery Project’,
which is seeking to deliver even more habitat creation and management for you to assist with
the management of.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • You will have excellent practical skills and experience of reserve maintenance.
  • You will have a proven track record of completing work alone and working within a varied
    team.
  • Experience of managing volunteers from a range of backgrounds and leading work parties.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A full manual driving licence which is valid for use in the UK.
  • Good bird identification skills and experience of biological surveys.

Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Lantra / NPTC or equivalent qualification for use of brushcutter.
  • Knowledge of servicing and maintaining machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Experience of volunteer recruitment and line management.
  • Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments.
  • Experience using GPS mapping software.
  • Excellent organisation and time keeping skills.
  • Competent user of standard IT applications (eg Microsoft Office, word, Excel).

This is a fixed-term role for 6 months, full-time for 37.5 hours per week. 

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further
advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
