The Physical Education Teacher Education program prepares aspiring educators to teach about the importance of developmentally appropriate movement concepts and skills for students in K-12 schools. We work to promote community-engaged and culturally relevant educators who are socially just, and we foster transdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and service for impact. Our program focuses on the local and global needs of our rapidly changing world, and we partner with our communities to work towards access and justice for all. Physical Education offers degree programs at the undergraduate and Master’s levels.

We invite candidates to apply for an Assistant Professor of Instruction position on the Tampa campus to teach physical education preparation courses and support pre-service teachers in becoming leaders in physical education. Primary responsibilities include (1) teaching undergraduate or graduate courses in physical education, (2) supporting high-quality practicum and field experiences for teacher candidates, and (3) serving as the course lead for undergraduate courses.

We are especially interested in candidates who can 1) model deep, developmentally appropriate expertise in K-12 physical education methods; 2) work with local school districts and teachers to provide high-quality field experiences for teacher candidates; and 3) work collaboratively with colleagues and students to address the range of challenges that youth experience in Physical Education.  This is a 9-month, non-tenure track position, effective August 7, 2024, with a typical teaching load of four courses per semester.

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate in physical education (or closely related field) by the time of appointment;
  • Experience teaching college-level physical education courses (or courses that are in a closely related field);
  • At least 18 graduate hours of physical education coursework, sufficient for accreditation purposes.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of commitment to issues of equity and teaching for diverse learners;
  • Evidence of excellence and effectiveness in teaching at the college level, commensurate with experience;
  • Experience teaching youth in K-12 school settings or equivalent;
  • Interest/specialization in any of the following: elementary physical education, adapted physical education/physical activity, coaching, etc.;
  • Willingness to contribute to school-based partnership efforts;
  • Evidence of supervision/coaching of pre-service or in-service teachers;
  • Demonstrated skill in teaching online, commensurate with experience, including developing advanced pedagogies for teaching online courses;
  • Evidence of working as a contributing member of a collaborative group;
  • Evidence of a commitment to student success.

The Department of Language, Literacy, Ed.D., Exceptional Education, and Physical Education (LLEEP) is a multi-campus academic unit with faculty on all three University of South Florida System campuses. The Department provides undergraduate, graduate, and in-service programs and learning experiences that reflect collaboration with stakeholders, incorporation of professional practice standards, and alignment with state, national, and international standards.
