About the School
The Sol Price School of Public Policy is organized into four departments: health policy and management, public policy and management, real estate development, and urban planning and spatial analysis. We offer academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels in six distinct fields: health policy and management, nonprofit management and leadership, public administration, public policy, real estate development, and urban planning. Much of our research takes place in 18 interdisciplinary research centers and institutes. Price School expertise spans the public, nonprofit and private sectors, with impact that is mission-driven and global.
USC Price is the second oldest public policy school in the country and is ranked fourth in the U.S. News & World Report rankings of public affairs schools. To help Price continue its upward trajectory as it strives to be the best public policy school in the nation, we are seeking a highly-skilled and talented Associate Dean for Advancement.
The Position
The Associate Dean for Advancement reports to the Dean and serves as the chief development officer managing the comprehensive fundraising efforts for the Price School. This individual will create a development plan that broadens the schools base of support and enhances its long-term financial position. The Associate Dean has oversight of major gifts, alumni relations, board management, and foundation relations.
Key Responsibilities Include
Developing, coordinating and implementing fundraising strategies to ensure compliance with university fundraising policies, goals and procedures;
Collaborating with the dean, faculty and research centers to establish school fundraising goals;
Leading major fundraising efforts and volunteers who assist in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major prospectsincluding a Board of Councilors consisting of leaders from government, foundations, nonprofits and business;
Acting as the schools liaison with the University of Southern Californias central development offices, collaborating with colleagues across the University, and representing Prices needs and interests;
Interacting with alumni, donors, and other prospects to achieve the schools specific fundraising objectives. The individual selected will have oversight for alumni relationships, donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and will develop, prepare and present formal fundraising proposals to major prospects;
Researching, identifying, cultivating and soliciting major prospects and for developing strategic goals to cultivate participation;
Identifying grant opportunities, writing grant proposals, and managing the grant application process. Ensuring compliance with grant requirements and reporting on the effective use of funds;
Collaborating with communication teams to promote the organization’s mission, programs, and impact to potential donors and the public;
Managing the departmental fiscal year operating budget, authorizing expenditures; and providing financial status reports and projections;
Developing and managing donor relations and prospect management systems, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
Developing and managing a team of advancement staff to include hiring, training, performance assessment, counseling, discipline and salary administration;
Leading the ongoing design and staffing of the fundraising infrastructure to create a sustainable, high-performing advancement unit;
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
The Candidate for Associate Dean of Advancement will have at minimum:
Bachelor’s degree
Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising and development, with an exceptionally strong record of experience in the cultivation and successful solicitation of major gifts and the creation of effective advancement programs
Major campaign, fundraising, and staff and senior volunteer group management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree
Relevant work experience of 10+ years
Advancement and fundraising experience at USC or another academic environment
Ability to build and inspire a high-performing fundraising team with quantitative reporting
Ability to build strong relationships with alumni, donors, faculty, and staff
Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
Capacity to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
Willingness to travel and attend university events after normal business hours
Expertise in grant writing/submissions and awards
Facility with donor relations and prospect management systems, computer programs and applications, and relational databases
Exceptional verbal and written communications skillsmust possess strong interpersonal skills including the ability to listen carefully and respectfully and to speak with diplomacy and tact
Experience selecting, training, mentoring and supervising staff
The annual base salary range for this position is $185,000 $250,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidates work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

Minimum Education: Bachelors degree Minimum Experience: 8 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Eight years experience in planning development efforts in support of institutional and departmental strategies, and managing and leading goal-oriented teams. Experience in academic and/or higher education development, collaborating with prominent faculty, and working understanding of university research units. Demonstrated track record of success securing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals. Exemplary interpersonal skills for communicating for cold calling, developing relationships with all types of students, staff and alumni, and being particularly sensitive to diverse, sophisticated, high-net worth individuals and groups. Knowledge of human resources processes, with experience in mediation, negotiation, staff development, and teaching/training staff. Demonstrated experience developing communication plans, instructional materials and related content, and with conducting in-person meetings. Experience applying policies and procedures, writing legal and technical documents, and at assembling, organizing, and conceptualizing numerical data in spreadsheets, databases, reports, and presentations. Lead/guidance skills, with the ability to manage, balance and prioritize different tasks and projects for various projects. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Knowledge of risk management and liability issues affecting higher education.
