About the position:

The Associate Director is responsible for assisting in the strategy, technical assistance, program management, and evaluation of the Africa and Middle East regional portfolio in line with Americares overarching strategy and operational plan. The Associate Director is part of a highly efficient and motivated team. She/he/they will support Americares programs across access to medicine, emergency programs, and health systems strengthening across women’s and children’s health; social and behavioral change and community engagement; water, sanitation, and hygiene; climate and health; mental health; and non-communicable diseases. The role is highly collaborative and involves regular engagement with internal and external stakeholders. The Associate Director will work closely with the Tanzania country team (and other countries, if needed) to identify innovative approaches to health issues and design programming activities.

The Associate Director supports the Senior Director in identifying opportunities for developing and supporting the implementation of projects designed to build local capacities within the context of Americares Strategic Plan and its global health programmatic framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Support the annual strategic planning process and ensure that all program and project development and implementation is aligned with Americares strategic vision.

Program/Partnership Oversight and Development

  • Ensure high level of excellence in execution of our programs and partnerships through the successful design, delivery and evaluation of our projects against targets with an emphasis on disciplined project management and robust M&E activities;
  • Work with teams to follow project cycle management principles in order to design impactful programs;
  • Support Sr. Director in raising visibility and building alliances with donors, peer NGOs, partners, government agencies and other local and international stakeholders for collaborative approaches;
  • Support Sr. Director, Africa and Middle East Programs in program development in terms of prospecting, pre-positioning, and pursuing new funding opportunities, in coordination with internal stakeholders;
  • Support donor engagement activities as needed.

Program Implementation and Backstop

  • Support the Tanzania country office (and other country offices, as needed) in program design and the development of corresponding internal deliverables for various programs;
  • Conduct data collection and analysis of field data for programmatic assessments, e.g., needs assessments for program design, monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of indicator data for current programs, as needed;
  • Support the country office(s) in ensuring high program quality for its portfolio, including conducting literature reviews of global/national guidelines and assessing alignment, reviewing indicator data, developing and adapting program tools, etc.;
  • Support program implementation in terms of work-plan development and monitoring and liaising with HQ for technical assistance for country offices;
  • Facilitate the development and review process of training curricula and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials for various programs;
  • Lead development of training content and roll-out for trainings and workshops with country program staff and partners on key program design and management topics and best practices;
  • Support country and HQ teams in developing reports and deliverables for donors, including USAID;
  • Facilitate budget vs. actuals analysis and forecasting processes in collaboration with country teams and Finance departments, including development of tools and facilitation of meetings.

Program Communications and Knowledge Management

  • Lead development of knowledge management systems for the region, while maintaining accurate information sharing, including repository of national and global policies;
  • In partnership with Africa and Middle East Programs team and Marketing and Communications teams:
    • Lead development and implementation of plan for updating website content for Africa and Middle East Programs;
    • Lead development of external-facing marketing materials, including briefs, social media posts, etc., for regional program and medicine security efforts;
    • Support Sr. Director, Africa and Middle East Programs in other regional priorities and initiatives, as requested.

These competencies are required for the role:

  • Master’s degree with concentration in a relevant field including, but not limited to, global health, public health, international development;
  • Demonstrated success in program development, strategic planning, management and implementation, and evaluation in global public health, medical relief, international aid, healthcare, emergency response and/or managing pharmaceuticals;
  • Technical expertise in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and social and behavioral change programming;
  • Strong experience in grants and business development, including capture strategies, development and management of multi-year proposals, and partnership development across private and institutional funding sources;
  • At least two years of proposal development and/or grants and budget management experience with US government donors and/or foundations;
  • Direct professional experience in Eastern and/or Central Africa and cultural/regional knowledge of Africa;
  • Demonstrated ability to work across cultures and language barriers History of building partnerships – working effectively and respectfully with host country governments, local and international NGOs, and the private sector in complex environments;
  • Successful team or project lead experience with the ability to successfully motivate a team to accomplish the goals of the department and organization, with an ability to focus on the bigger vision while providing attention to detail.

These competencies would be great to have, but are not required:

  • Diverse public health experience across sectors within the region;
  • Strong familiarity with Tanzania;
  • Knowledge of Swahili and/or French is an asset;
  • Fluency in languages that are spoken in at least one of our core locations (India, Philippines, Tanzania, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Colombia, etc.), in addition to English.
