The Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate Director, Civic Learning for Center for Social Concern (CSC), housed on the Homewood Campus. The Center for Social Concern (CSC) fosters a lifelong commitment to active citizenship by integrating education, action, and reflection into community-focused programming for Hopkins’ students within Baltimore City. The CSC leadership team is comprised of one Executive Director, one Deputy Director, and two Associate Directors, to support the staff and student leadership within programs. This role, as Associate Director will focus on civic learning and assessment will play a pivotal role in the creation, evaluation, and enhancement of opportunities within the CSC. This position will be responsible for leading the civic and community-based learning initiatives, as well as, supervising a team of individuals who implement civic learning programming in the areas of student leadership development, co-curricular learning, democratic engagement, civic and political dialogues, and student voter education.

The Associate Director will provide oversight, leadership, and support to staff in the civic learning roles and to faculty engaged in CSC community-based learning opportunities. A primary role will be to provide programmatic direction for the suite of CSC programs related to community-based learning and engagement between JHU faculty and the Baltimore City community. This includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Engaged Scholar Faculty and Community Partner Fellows Program and B’more courses. The Engaged Scholar Faculty & Community Partner Fellows Program is a cohort-based program housed at the CSC that facilitates the development and implementation of mutually beneficial Community-Based Learning courses. Community-Based Learning is a high-impact pedagogy that connects Faculty and Community Partners as co-educators for the purpose of prompting students to critically think about social and civic issues, while simultaneously meeting community partner/education partner-identified goals. With CSC staff, the Associate Director Civic Learning will foster team-based initiatives and support the year-round community-based learning and civic learning programming that staff members are implementing. These roles include experience-based community service programs, civic engagement initiatives, community-based learning, episodic direct service, and education-based programs. This role will also supervise the development of democratic programming cultivating civic learning on free speech on campus, both within the CSC and in support of broader Student Affairs programs and projects. With guidance from the Deputy Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing tools and processes for evaluating the effectiveness of the programs and working as part of the leadership to set direction for CSC programming and operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Programming 40%

  • Lead and oversee the CSC Engaged Faculty Fellows program including the recruitment, onboarding, and training of a cohort of faculty fellows each academic year.
  • Serve as the lead in designing and implementing the B’More Intersession program for first-year students in coordination with the JHU Intersession Office.
  • Co-design and co-facilitate one B’More course per Intersession period in coordination with a Baltimore City community partner.
  • In coordination with CSC staff, coordinate connections between JHU faculty, existing CSC community partners, and CSC focus areas specifically civic and democratic engagement.
  • In coordination with the Center for Educational Resources (CER), convene a community of practice to engage JHU faculty in Community-Based Learning topics and pedagogical best practices.

Management 30%

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of full-time staff members and a roster of CSC student employees responsible for the implementation of CSC programming and operations.
  • Supervise CSC office interns supporting community-based learning initiatives, as necessary.
  • Advise roughly five CSC-affiliated student service organizations each year.
  • Coordinate training of CSC staff to ensure that all existing staff and new hires understand and effectively implement the CSC’s Education, Action, Reflection framework across all CSC-affiliated programs.
  • Serve as lead of the CSC’s Training team in coordination with CSC staff.
  • Create and support a team-based culture of staff members, focusing on programmatic excellence in civic learning for the CSC.
  • Oversee the management of multiple program budgets.
  • Oversee the advisement, evaluation, and management processes of 50+ student organizations and collaborative community-based learning, community service, and civic engagement programs.
  • Oversee the process of providing CSC’s Executive Director with programmatic details needed for fundraising, strategic planning, and assessment.

Strategic Planning and Program Development 20%

  • Collaboratively plan for strategic alignment for the Center’s implementation of civic learning programming and operational support.
  • Develop, track, and revise civic learning goals in alignment with growth planning for the CSC and focusing on operational excellence in all that we do.
  • Develop, track, and revise student learning outcomes across all CSC programs in alignment with the CSC education, action, reflection (EAR) approach, the Student Affairs Aspirations, and the Office of Institutional Assessment.
  • Work collaboratively to develop programmatic initiatives that create partnerships between students, faculty, and community partners which seek to increase the number of students participating in civic learning experiences.
  • Participate in operational steering committees as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to support the recruitment of faculty, staff, and community partners in the development of academically rigorous community-based learning courses, community-based participatory research projects, and democratic voter engagement and nonpartisan political learning projects.

Community Relations 10%

  • Represent the CSC to community-engaged and public scholarship stakeholders within and outside of JHU.
  • Be the primary liaison between JHU faculty and community-based partner organizations of the CSC.
  • Provide direct support to the coordination and promotion of annual CSC programs including but not limited to President’s Day of Service, Student Employment, Faculty Fellows, Democracy Day, Hopkins Votes, Civic Learning Development Program, student organizations, and community-engaged work.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team to plan for and conduct focus groups, evaluations, and/or surveys to community partners to identify academic-community partnership needs and assets.
  • Meet with area and university stakeholders interested in forming new program collaborations with the CSC.

  • A sophisticated understanding of the economic and racialized systemic inequities in Baltimore and demonstrated commitment to advancing equitable community engagement.
  • Comfort and desire to live and work in a city environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to bring a high degree of enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to civic engagement and team development.
  • Excellent judgment in the realms of program development and evaluation, staff supervision, and team-based leadership.
  • Excellent ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty members, and staff at all levels.
  • Previous experience in mentoring and counseling staff members and students.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds (e.g., class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc.) and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.
  • Have implemented and managed campus programs and/or non-profit programs.
  • Strong budgetary, planning, organizational, supervision, and management skills and previous experience with event planning.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of service-learning pedagogy or community partnership best practices.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of higher education policies, protocols, and programmatic support of free speech, rallies, and democratic learning and engagement.

Additional Information

  • The Associate Director’s responsibilities may require in-state or out-of-state travel, as well as evening and weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education, human services, or non-profit work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, with a preference for an advanced degree or terminal degree.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in higher education, community-based learning and/or research, human services, or non-profit work is desirable; a background in student. development and programming, counseling, service-learning, nonprofit program management, or another related field is preferred.
