The Johns Hopkins University is seeking an Associate Director, Community Engagement for Center for Social Concern (CSC), housed on the Homewood Campus. The Center for Social Concern (CSC) fosters a lifelong commitment to active citizenship by integrating education, action, and reflection into community-focused programming for Hopkins’ students within Baltimore City. The CSC leadership team is comprised of one Executive Director, one Deputy Director, and two Associate Directors, to support the staff and student leadership within programs. This role, as Associate Director will focus on community engagement and assessment will play a pivotal role in the creation, evaluation, and enhancement of opportunities within the CSC. This position will be responsible for leading the community engagement initiatives, as well as, supervising a team of individuals who implement community-engaged programming in the areas of federal work-study, internships, direct service, and tutoring.

The Associate Director will provide oversight, leadership, and support to staff in community engagement roles and to students engaged in CSC direct service opportunities. A primary role will be to provide programmatic direction for the suite of CSC programs related to direct service and engagement between JHU students and the Baltimore City community. This includes the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Baltimore First program. Baltimore First is the Center for Social Concern’s primary community engagement program offered during the academic year. Committed to utilizing a sustainable service model, Baltimore First matches groups of students to volunteer with the same Service Partner for the duration of a semester. In addition to weekly volunteering, Baltimore First members attend educational workshops, critical reflection sessions, cohort socials, and Baltimore-based community events. By coordinating accessible opportunities to engage with Baltimore and facilitating complementary education and reflection sessions, Baltimore First equips students to intentionally engage with diverse communities, promotes awareness of Baltimore’s social equity ecosystem, builds community both on and off campus, and inspires a commitment to active citizenship. With CSC staff, the Associate Director of Community Engagement will foster team-based initiatives and support the year-round community engagement programming that staff members are implementing. These roles include experience-based community service programs, civic engagement initiatives, tutoring, episodic direct service, and internship programs. With guidance from the Deputy Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing tools and processes for evaluating the effectiveness of the programs and working as part of the leadership to set direction for CSC programming and operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Programming 25%

  • Lead and oversee the CSC Baltimore First program including the recruitment, onboarding, and training of a cohort of students each academic year.
  • Supervising team of Student Directors (establish action items and send reminders, mentorship, advocacy, removing barriers, liaising with CSC staff, supporting them in setting and meeting goals, and professional development).
  • Ensuring CSC policies (risk management, child safety) procedures are being followed.
  • Provide curriculum/content for educational workshops including professional development for Student Directors and Shift Leads.
  • Make program calendar/timeline.
  • Steward Service Partner relationships.
  • Manage transportation, budget, and financial tasks.
  • In coordination with CSC staff, lead program evaluation and contribute to internal and external reporting.
  • Support university-wide community engagement efforts led by the CSC.

Management 25%

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of full-time staff members responsible for the implementation of CSC programming and operations.
  • Supervise CSC office interns supporting community engagement initiatives, as necessary.
  • Advise roughly five CSC-affiliated student service organizations each year.
  • Serve as co-lead of the CSC’s Training team in coordination with CSC staff.
  • Create and support a team-based culture of staff members, focusing on programmatic excellence in community engagement for the CSC.
  • Oversee the management of multiple program budgets.
  • Oversee the process of providing CSC’s Executive Director with programmatic details needed for fundraising, strategic planning, and assessment.

Strategic Planning & Program Development 20%

  • Collaboratively plan for strategic alignment for the Center’s implementation of community engagement programming and operational support.
  • Develop, track, and revise community engagement goals in alignment with growth planning for the CSC and focusing on programmatic excellence in all that we do.
  • Work collaboratively to develop programmatic initiatives that create partnerships between students, faculty, and community partners which seek to increase the number, diversity, and quality of Baltimore organizations and agencies participating in JHU community engagement experiences.
  • Participate in operational steering committees as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to support the recruitment of community partners, students, faculty, and staff in the development of equitable community engagement and direct service experiences, tutoring and engagement with the K-12 population in Baltimore City, internships, and community-based federal work-study.

Community Relations 30%

  • Design and implement a process and guidelines for recruiting, executing, and sustaining community partnerships.
  • Represent the CSC to community engagement stakeholders within and outside of JHU.
  • Be the primary liaison between JHU students and community-based partner organizations of the CSC.
  • Provide direct support to the coordination and promotion of annual CSC programs including but not limited to President’s Day of Service, Student Employment, Tutorial Project, Democracy Day, Community Impact Internships Program, In-Community Interns, student organizations, and community-engaged work.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team to plan for and conduct focus groups, evaluations, and/or surveys to community partners to identify community partnership needs and assets.
  • Meet with area and university stakeholders interested in forming new program collaborations with the CSC.

  • Excellent judgment in the realms of program development and evaluation, staff supervision, and team-based leadership.
  • Excellent ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty members, and staff at all levels.
  • Previous experience in mentoring and counseling staff members and students.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds (e.g., class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc.) and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture.
  • Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.
  • Have implemented and managed campus programs and/or non-profit programs.
  • Strong budgetary, planning, organizational, supervision, and management skills and previous experience with event planning.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of service-learning pedagogy or community partnership best practices.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of Baltimore’s resources to support civic, cultural, and community-based organizations.

Additional Information

  • The Associate Director’s responsibilities may require in-state or out-of-state travel, as well as evening and weekend hours.
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education, human services, or non-profit work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree, with a preference for an Advanced Degree or Terminal Degree.
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience/background in student development and programming, counseling, service-learning, nonprofit program management or another related field is preferred.
