Role Purpose

Associate Directors are accomplished, networked in their field, and bring deep experience in their thematic area of specialty. Associate Directors will support the Managing Directors office as well as Opportunities.

The expectation is that the Associate Directors will be strong managers, as well as subject matter experts for different opportunities (time-bound initiatives at the heart of OSF’s work), able to build teams and work closely with others the to build a collaborative culture of both risk-taking and teamwork.

Key Responsibilities

As Associate Director of the Managing Director’s Office, you will:

  • Support your supervisor, a Managing Director of Programs, in developing creative and impactful programs (called “opportunities” at OSF) that the foundation might support
  • Support the Managing Director to ensure appropriate financial, risk, and legal management and controls are factored into and considered in all work and work with relevant stakeholders to develop mitigation plans
  • Support the Managing Director manage budgetary and human resources
  • Monitor and regularly report on the progress of program work to the Managing Director and other senior OSF leaders
  • Leverage OSF’s work globally and employ OSF tools – of impact investment, strategic litigation, and advocacy – to advance program work
  • Represent program work externally, and grow a network accordingly that includes actors beyond the social sector, including national and local governments, multilateral organizations, faith-based groups, grassroots organizations, philanthropy, local experts, academia and think tanks, to advance our work. This includes developing relationships with other funders and at times bringing them on as partners in our work.
  • Oversee the effective management of the grant-making process (across the specific portfolio — a set of Opportunities), by communicating with grantees on proposal submission, grant record preparation, grant processing, payments, reporting, and other related processes
  • Represent the Managing Director, Programs as needed, internally and externally.

Essential Experience:

  • Leadership experience and/or operating in a special advisory capacity for senior leadership
  • Programmatic expertise
  • Prior annual financial, legal and risk management and accountability at meaningful scale
  • Fluent in local language where the role may be based (New York, Washington D.C., Rio De Janeiro and Mexico City)

Functional Competencies:

  • Conceives, designs and manages cross-department, cross-program or similarly complex projects; expected to effectively manage time, budget and stakeholders, and have performed complex coordination
  • Adept at resource planning and operational management
  • Experience in budgeting, strategic analysis and planning
  • Able to generate, capture and organize information and knowledge
  • Able to conduct research to drive management decision making
  • Able y to build synergies, strengthen organizations and fields, and identify and fill capacity gaps across fields
  • Works well with a variety of public, private and NGO stakeholders
  • Builds and maintains networks of stakeholders
  • Promotes strategic cooperation with governmental and other sectors

Languages:

  • An excellent knowledge of English and fluency of the local language (where this is not English)
