Associate Director of Development

The primary focus of this role is to build, grow, diversify and maximize unrestricted and flexible funding through the development of strategic engagements with influential and high-profile individuals, and grant making foundations and trusts in North America. The Associate Director of Development will be responsible for developing and implementing an ambitious strategy to help IUCN drive change through philanthropic partnerships with US-based donors including by developing and maintaining a pipeline of philanthropic supporters at the major gift level. In addition to developing and overseeing a strategic fundraising program for US donors, this role will also be responsible for developing and building some of the fundraising infrastructure required to ensuring that the donor pipeline is robust. This post is a critical role and there is an expectation that the Associate Director of Development will secure funding in the first 12 months of being appointed.
Specific duties and deliverables:
  • Drive the development and implementation of an ambitious and comprehensive High Net-Worth Individuals (HNWIs) and grant making foundations revenue strategy that deepens existing relationships and prioritizes building a six and seven-figure, multi-year, donor pipelines in the United States, focusing on unrestricted and flexible funding.
  • Maximize unrestricted and highly flexible revenue while modeling best-practice, innovative approaches to pipeline development and funder management.
  • Advise on an overall strategic narrative for investment and help create materials that best describe and promote the existing project portfolio and work of IUCN-US as a “friends-of” program.
  • Work with the CEO of IUCN-US and the Board of Directors to maximize fundraising contributions
  • Identify and maintain a HNWI and foundations prospect list.
  • Develop and implement cultivation strategies leading to transformative gifts to support the work of IUCN including identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding HNWI and Foundations prospect lists.
  • Represent North America on the Strategic Partnerships Unit, helping to identify, cultivate and steward IUCN Patrons of Nature and to support the development and growth of a new Major Donor Programme to maximise support for IUCN core operations from these funding streams.
  • Establish and manage meaningful relationships with major donors (HNWI), with some of these leading to their engagement as a Patrons of Nature.
  • Prepare briefings, business intelligence on philanthropic trends and donor profiles for senior leadership as needed.
  • Support the development and implementation of individual fundraising campaigns
  • Create and manage a stewardship program that encompasses high level meetings with new donors, outreach events, participation in conferences and networking events.
  • Develop best in class systems and processes to improve fundraising coordination, efficiency and effectiveness for US based donors across the organization.
  • Develop a strong portfolio of donors with a view to growing the team to reflect resource needs for a successful operation.
  • In concert with the IUCN US CEO and the relevant staff members at IUCN HQ develop annual fundraising budgets and related income targets
  • Monitor and analyse fundraising results in alignment with IUCN HQ to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed
Requirements:
  • At least ten years work experience as a professional fundraiser, preferably for environmental, social or climate justice organizations.
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices and the Philanthropic landscape across the United States is essential.
  • Existing networks and contacts into family offices/foundations in place.
  • A passion for environment, conservation, sustainable development.
  • A proven track-record of securing funds at the six-figure level at minimum.
  • Demonstrated leadership in designing, managing and implementing a full suite of fundraising efforts, including individual fundraising campaigns.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment across multiple programmes and regions.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written
  • International orientation and passion for global work. Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, strategic thinking, commitment to results, attention to detail, and solutions-oriented
  • Willingness to travel within the United States and occasionally internationally.
  • Must be stationed in Washington DC at the IUCN NARO office.
