Associate Director of Development

The Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Office of
Development (VP&S OOD), a part of the Columbia University
Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), is dedicated to facilitating
relationships that support the vision and mission of CUIMC and
VP&S: to advance biomedical research, patient care, medical and
scientific training, and community impact.

 

Position Summary

Reporting to the OOD Executive Director of Development, in
conjunction with the two Directors of Development working in
Children’s Health, the Associate Director of Development will
manage multi-level assignments and serve as both an internal and
external liaison for Columbia Children’s Health. Partnering with
faculty and volunteer leadership groups, which may include the
Babies Heart Fund Board and the Children’s Board at Columbia. The
Associate Director will provide support to senior development
staff, each of whom have a portfolio of major gift donors and
prospects and who manage several large annual fundraising events,
with a primary focus on activities that will cultivate
relationships leading to principal gifts for Children’s Health, and
other key priority areas as needed. The incumbent will also
participate in prospect assessment and assignment processes.

With a focus on enhancing visibility and philanthropic support
for Children’s Health programs at CUIMC, the incumbent’s
responsibilities include: assisting with coordination of large
annual fundraising events, developing and managing smaller
cultivation events including virtual and in-person meetings of
various volunteer boards and councils, managing select prospects as
assigned, participation in the development of funding proposals and
stewardship reports, assisting in the development of a
communications strategy including the creation of collateral
materials, newsletters, and coordination of notification and
acknowledgement initiatives for major gift donors. Responsibilities
will also include tracking gifts for key initiatives and working
closely with administrative staff in key priority areas. Other
duties as assigned.

 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage select communications including
    briefings, timelines, solicitation letters, and acknowledgments;
    develop stewardship, cultivation, and engagement events for
    Children’s Health; manage the Children’s Health peer-to-peer
    fundraising platform initiatives; manage select prospects as
    assigned, and other key areas as assigned.

  • Prepare proposals and donor impact reports, manage a
    stewardship calendar, provide support for prospect cultivation;
    keep current with and be able to convey information about
    Children’s Health initiatives. Staff Executive Director of
    Development and Directors of Development working with Children’s
    Health, and their major gift efforts. – 35%
  • Support Directors of Development in managing the Babies Heart
    Fund Board and the Children’s Board at Columbia: Fundraising,
    Marketing/Communications, and Nominations. Coordinate meetings;
    create materials and communications for the volunteer groups.

  • Participate in prospect assessment and research processes and
    assignment. – 5%

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus three years of
    directly related experience, in development fundraising or a
    related field, preferably in a health care or higher education
    environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to develop productive relationships with
    internal and external constituents such as donors, prospects,
    volunteers, medical leaders, and scientific faculty.
  • Excellent ability to set priorities and perform in a fast-paced
    environment.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who demonstrates excellent
    judgment and discretion, resilience with a high level of
    independent decision making.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, plus
    interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills required.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and
    Outlook is a must.
  • This position requires work beyond regular hours, including
    evenings and weekends, as projects and events require.
