Associate Director of Development, Duke University Libraries and Duke University Press

The Duke University Libraries and the Duke University Press are
seeking a frontline fundraiser to join its Development team as we
prepare for the public phase of a university-wide comprehensive
fundraising campaign. The Associate Director will identify and
develop relationships with prospects and donors through individual
outreach (virtual and in-person), spending 75% of time focusing on
Duke University Libraries and 25% of time focusing on Duke
University Press.

 

The ideal candidate will be motivated, professional, strategic,
and results-driven. We’re looking for someone who believes in the
missions of Duke University and has exceptional drive to advance
our office’s fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities

85% of time:

  • Travels approximately 15 times a year to develop and maintain
    professional relationships with new and established prospects and
    donors (individuals, corporations, and foundations) in order to
    qualify interest, cultivate awareness, solicit and secure gifts,
    and provide stewardship.
  • Supports efforts to grow and enrich the Libraries and Press’s
    prospect pipelines by identifying individuals who have the capacity
    and inclination to provide philanthropic support.
  • Plans and implements a fundraising approach for areas of
    strategic importance to the Duke University Libraries and the Duke
    Press.
  • Creates case statements and proposals to communicate
    philanthropic support priorities to individual donors,
    corporations, and foundations.
  • Collaborates with gift officers from other Duke University
    schools and units, including Duke Alumni Engagement and
    Development, to cultivate and solicit multi-interest
    prospects.
  • Utilizes university-wide prospect tracking systems to assure
    efficient and well-coordinated efforts.
  • Stays continuously up to date on opportunities for
    philanthropic support, taking advantage of opportunities to learn
    within the Libraries and the Press, as well as across Duke.

 

Other Development: 15% of time:

  • Provides oversight, planning, and implementation of special
    events, as needed.
  • Assists with the management of volunteer boards, committees,
    and advisory groups as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

It is the expectation that all Duke University Libraries staff

Education:

Required: Work requires communication,
analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through
completion of a bachelor’s degree program.

 

Experience:

Required:  Work requires five years’
experience in alumni affairs, public relations, fundraising, sales
and promotions, marketing, student activities or a related field to
acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or
participate in general fundraising activities and proposal
development. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION
AND/OR EXPERIENCE

 

Preferred: 

  • Knowledge of libraries, university presses, or Duke
    University.
  • Demonstrated fundraising experience and ability to meet/exceed
    set annual goals.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously, working
    both independently and as a team member.
  • Refined written and oral communication skills with the ability
    to articulate the importance of philanthropic support.
  • Experience and comfort in interacting with alumni and parents,
    including senior-level executives and other successful alumni with
    significant giving capacity.
  • Exceptional ability to think strategically and
    analytically.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and experience
    and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong work ethic in a fast-paced, results-oriented team
    environment.

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience; anticipated
salary range $70,000-$90,000. Comprehensive benefits package
includes 15 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave;
  health, dental, disability and life insurance and
support for professional development and training.
