Position Overview

The Department of Medicine Development in VP Advancement is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Associate Director of Development.

Reporting to the Director of Development, Cumming School of Medicine and works closely with other members of both the faculty and the University Development Teams. The Associate Director of Development is responsible for developing and cultivating donor relationships to secure donations to help achieve philanthropic goals and objectives. This position interacts with different collaborating groups including donors, alumni and volunteers, and has access to highly sensitive and confidential information.The impact of decisions made by this position will be Faculty and University- wide. Diplomacy, tact, discretion, conflict resolution and ability to manage fluid expectations, projects and deadlines are key skills required by this role.

The position is part of the Cumming School of Medicine’s Development team and is involved in the planning, development and implementation of a proactive development program, to help achieve the school’s fund raising targets.  By achieving targets, this position will also contribute to the goals of a significant University institutional fundraising campaign.In collaboration with the Director of Development and the Development Team, you will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors to the Cumming School of Medicine. This position contributes to the goal of ensuring continued financial support is received from donors, and appropriately stewarding and recognizing these donors.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Secure donations at the $25,000+ gift level.
  • Develop prospect lists and qualify new donors in compliance with Prospect Management and University policies.
  • Assist faculty members, unit leaders and volunteers in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors to the school.
  • Build strong relationships with donors; develop stewardship and cultivation plans.
  • Lead and manage a leadership giving program focused on the priority initiatives of the school.
  • Work effectively in a large, complex, dynamic and sophisticated organization.
  • Prepare written fund development materials including proposals, stewardship reports and other materials as required.
  • Ensure confidentiality and strong professional ethics, demonstrating honesty, integrity, high standards, and understanding and commitment to an academic environment.
  • Plan to achieve fundraising targets, while recognizing that achievement of financial targets is not the only measurement of success for a fundraiser.
  • Consult with Director of Development on all matters pertaining to fund development.
  • Collaborate with the Development Office to ensure coordination of the Cumming School of Medicine fundraising priorities with institutional strategies for donors.
  • Practice ethical fundraising in keeping with the University’s mission and values and in accordance with charitable giving standards.
  • Ensure ongoing personal development in fundraising and the post-secondary learning environment.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree and minimum of 3 years directly related experience, preferably in a fundraising or post-secondary educational setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in major gift ($25,000+) solicitation is required.
  • Proven leadership ability and experience recruiting, training and motivating volunteers.
  • Ability to produce compelling communication tools for use in development, including cases for support, gift proposals, presentations and collateral materials.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, energetic and goal oriented.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess good listening as well as sound judgment and decision making capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and interact with staff at all levels.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge fundraising software an asset.
