Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’
focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a
national and global leader in higher education. We create and
foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and
philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University &
Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with
donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and
patients.

 
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work
model which includes four different work modalities. This role has
a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per
week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where
the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees
who travel on university business can count those days towards
their onsite days.
 
In preparation for the next comprehensive campaign,
the School of Nursing (SON) and Bloomberg School of Public Health
(BSPH) aim to establish a new joint position focused on the
stewardship of principal level ($1M+) and select major ($100K+)
donors. The purpose of this dual-reporting position is to ensure a
strategic and timely stewardship plan year-round for each of the
top donors of each institution, thereby deepening the stewardship
of these important stakeholders in alignment with the mission of
each institution.
 

The Associate Director of Principal Gifts Stewardship supports
the planning, management and execution of individual,
forward-thinking, creative stewardship plans for engaging
principal-level gift donors and prospects for SON and BSPH.

 

The position reports to the Director of Development (SON) and
Director of Stewardship and Development Communications (BSPH).

 
 

The Associate Director of Principal Gifts Stewardship
will be responsible for coordinating the following programs and
activities:

  • Work closely with SON and BSPH leadership, faculty,
    administrators, and students to develop and implement stewardship
    plans of principal level donors.
  • Create comprehensive and innovative reporting materials to
    demonstrate impact.
    • These plans will aim to steward, celebrate, thank, and engage
      individual donors in activities that create a positive donor
      experience, providing a timely overview of the impact of their
      gift, and steward toward future philanthropy.
    • These activities will be tailored to align with individual
      donor preference, customized and personalized according to the
      circumstances and the donors/recipient’s relationship to
      SON/BSPH.
    • Develop and implement efficient and effective systems for
      managing these stewardship strategies/projects which will include
      such activities as gift announcements, celebration events,
      anniversaries, recognition displays, customized reports, thank you
      gifts, opportunistic communications, and engagement
      opportunities.
  • Create and execute strategies to collect and maintain
    longitudinal data on cohort/networks of scholars (eg, SON Conway
    Scholars/BSPH Health Equity Scholars/CLF-Lerner Fellows).
  • Monitor SON, BSPH, and JHU publications and websites for topics
    of interest to major and principal gift donors and proactively
    suggest and prepare information for donors on behalf of the Dean(s)
    and/or the Associate Dean(s).

 
 

BSPH PRINCIPAL GIFT DONOR STEWARDSHIP

  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean and Senior Associate
    Director of Principal Gifts to coordinate and implement principal
    gift level stewardship for our top 20-30 donors so that they align
    with principal gift donor strategies.
  • Partner and serve as stewardship expert to Principal Gifts and
    Major Gifts teams.
  • Create/manage stewardship plans and custom stewardship requests
    for principal-level donors, manages resources, ensures all level of
    staff understands roles/responsibilities.
    • Assist with the collection of data, written reports, and other
      materials needed to steward gifts.
  • Collect and prepare stewardship reports for professorship
    donors. Assist with professorship dedication events and Founders
    Wall strategy/events.
  • Collect and prepare stewardship reports for capital project
    donors. Assist with events associated with installation/dedication
    of named opportunity and additional stewardship activities designed
    to steward/engage the donor.
  • Collaborate with Sr. Writer to identify and plan donor focused
    stories for our principal gift level donors on the giving
    site.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Stewardship and Development
    Communications to monitor spending balances and distribution
    activities of principal gift donor funds, ensuring donor intent is
    upheld in accordance with gift agreements and all supporting
    documentation.
  • Serve as lead liaison with Central BP Stewardship Team
    • Obtain annual stewardship reports from BSPH funders
  • Discover and implement new stewardship strategies, tactics, and
    tools which will be applied to projects and planning.

 

SON PRINCIPAL GIFT/MAJOR DONOR STEWARDSHIP

  • Coordinate donor lunches, site visits, dinners, dedications and
    other stewardship events as required on behalf of the SON, working
    closely with institutional leadership and major gift officers, and
    events staff when necessary (responsibilities include scheduling,
    invitation lists, production of printed materials, catering
    arrangements, scripts, staffing, etc.).
  • Coordinate collection of scholarship recipient “thank you”
    letter(s) for principal gift scholarship donors; create and
    implement procedure to educate students about and engage students
    in this process.
  • Organize an annual recognition event for major donors of cohort
    scholarships to meet their students (venue selection, scheduling,
    invitation lists, production of printed materials, catering
    arrangements, photography, scripts, staffing, etc.).
  • Provide opportunities of virtual stewardship for donors who are
    not able to visit campus (video messages from recipients, Facebook
    Live events, Skype or FaceTime visits for donors and recipients,
    etc.).
  • Establish and coordinate a process for creating annual letters
    of impact to individual donors whose lifetime contribution to the
    School exceeds $100,000.
  • Research and write annual stewardship letters or reports to
    major donors as assigned.
  • Monitor spending balances and distribution activities of
    principal gift endowment and current use accounts, ensuring donor
    intent is upheld in accordance with gift agreements and all
    supporting documentation.
  • Serve as a liaison for select central offices, as appropriate
    for donor relations.
  • Partner with Associate Dean on stewardship and engagement
    strategies related to current, former, and prospective Nursing
    Advisory Board (NAB) members and other principal/major donors.

 

OTHER ACTIVITIES

  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of JHU personalized stewardship
    policies and procedures and ensure that all SON/BSPH staff are
    adhering to university-wide standards.
  • Partner with colleagues in Alumni Relations and other
    departments in development of engagement initiatives or alumni
    groups relevant to principal donor funding.
  • Demonstrates exemplary customer service in all communications
    and exchanges.
  • Oversees the management of data recorded regarding stewardship
    reporting responsibilities and reporting information in the JHAS
    database. Identify and resolve any issues related to the
    administration of reporting funds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three years related experience, with at least two years of
    professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of donor relations experience or related
    field.
  • Proven success at developing, writing, and implementing
    creative stewardship strategies and deliverables for major and
    principal level ($1 million plus) gifts in a team-oriented and
    collaborative environment.
  • Experience with alumni relations, development, and donor
    relations/stewardship.
  • This position requires a proactive, creative approach to
    engaging and stewarding donors. Must exercise excellent judgment
    and discretion, and possess strong organizational skills, attention
    to detail, initiative, superb writing skills and proof-reading
    abilities, the ability to set priorities effectively, work on
    multiple projects simultaneously, and to solve problems and work
    independently.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and
    PowerPoint).
  • Must be available to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
    Must present with professionalism and have strong teamwork and
    leadership skills.
