Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA). The incumbent reports to the Director of Division for Policy, Monitoring and Global Advocacy (DPMGA). OSAA is responsible for mobilizing international cooperation in support of Africa’s development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa, and coordinating UN system-wide support for Africa’s Development. 

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Economic Affairs Officer is responsible for:

Economic and/or sector analysis:

  • Collects, evaluates, interprets, analyses specified statistics and qualitative socio-economic information obtained from a variety of sources
  • Undertakes socio-economic policy analysis on new and emerging issues on Africa’s development
  • Assists in reviewing the implementation of commitments made toward Africa
  • Maintains databases and programmes for database management and organizes non- quantitative information.
  • Assists in the quantitative and qualitative studies and analysis on issues affecting Africa’s development
  • Prepares briefing notes, inputs to speeches and similar material on economic or sector issues
  • Prepares drafts of sector, country or regional components of analytical studies on Africa’s development issues and policies.
  • Assists in organizing and servicing of intergovernmental and expert group meetings, panels, round tables, seminars, etc on Africa’s development issues.
  • Assists with the follow-up implementation of global summits and conferences related to Africa, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Intergovernmental support:
  • Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies on issues related to Africa
  • Follows intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports and similar material on issues related to Africa.

General:

  • Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services;
  • Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Education

  • A first-level university degree in economics or related field is required.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the examinations for the Young Professionals Programme (YPP) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P). Experience in African development is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
