Company presentation
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was founded in 1991 when communism was crumbling in Europe and ex-Soviet countries needed support to nurture a new private sector and democracy. Today we invest to help build market economies from central Europe to central Asia and the southern and eastern Mediterranean. We are now the largest single investor in our region. Owned by 69 countries and two intergovernmental institutions, we provide project financing for banks, industries and businesses. We also work with publicly owned companies to support privatisation, restructure state-owned firms and improve municipal services. Wherever we are active, we promote policies that bolster the business climate.

The EBRD’s Environment and Sustainability Department (ESD), is seeking an experienced Associate to support the Monitoring team with tracking, analysis, interpretation and visualisation of monitoring data and process automation. The successful candidate will also help deliver the Bank’s commitments under its Environmental and Social Policy (ESP), covering environmental and social appraisal and monitoring of the Bank’s portfolio of projects and activities in various sectors; oversight and verification of the Bank’s approaches, assessments, monitoring, reporting and verification of environmental, social, green and other commitments relevant to ESDs mandate.
What is ESD?
The overarching role of ESD is to deliver the Bank’s commitments to promote environmental and social sustainable development in all its activities as enunciated in the Articles Establishing the Bank, and the commitments of the ESP. ESD does this by assessing and managing the environmental and social risks of projects utilising both the internal expertise of ESD and external experts as necessary. In parallel, ESD is also responsible for the review and verification of Paris alignment, green finance and physical climate risks.
The ESP is one of the Bank’s three good governance policies and a key document that guides the EBRD’s commitment to promoting ?environmentally sound and sustainable development? in the full range of its investment and operational activities. It sets out the ways in which we implement this commitment in practice and on our projects. The 2024 ESP and related Environmental and Social Requirements (ESRs) were approved by the EBRD Board of Directors in October 2024 and applies to projects initiated after 1 January 2025. Therefore, ESD will be applying the new ESP on the investments they will be working on.
The Associate, ESD Monitoring
Combined with the launch of the 2024 ESP and the ever evolving environmental and social sustainability agenda, ESD is now looking for an exceptional candidate to help the EBRD monitor E&S performance of projects.
ESD is keen to hear from candidates with the requirements specified in the job description and following experience:
-
Experience appraising environmental and social risks and impacts of a range of projects and/or sectors and implementation and monitoring of identified mitigation measures.
-
Experience with environmental and social data analysis, interpretation, visualisation, digitalisation and process automation solutions
-
Working knowledge of Environmental, Social Governance (ESG) platforms, including data management tools and software applications is preferable.
-
Experience with data management tools such as Cognos, Tableau and Power BI, will be an advantage.
-
Good awareness of new and emerging digital technologies (automation, dashboards, live reporting).
-
Quantitative analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to interpret complex social and environmental datasets and transform them into meaningful insights.

Right to Work in the UK: Swiss nationals (and all other non-UK employees) can work in the UK without a Visa – working at the EBRD gives all employees “exempt status”. The Bank however encourages all non-UK employees to obtain an Exempt Vignette (EV) prior to relocating to the UK, as without an EV you may face more questions at Border Control and when required to show evidence of their exempt status when renting accommodation under the Right to Rent legislation. The application process may take 3 – 4 weeks approx. outside of the UK.
