Org. Setting and Reporting
These positions are in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Human Rights Council and Treaty Mechanisms Division (HRCTMD), Human Rights Council Branch, Geneva. The incumbents will work under the general supervision of the Chief of the Human Rights Council Branch and the direct supervision of the Secretary of the Human Rights Council.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Human Rights Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Assists in the organization of and provides substantive and technical support to the regular and special sessions of the Human Rights Council (HRC), informal consultations and other meetings of the Council, as well as those of its subsidiary bodies and mechanisms. • Researches and collects information pertaining to human rights matters, including their gender dimensions from a variety of data sources (e.g. communications, publications, the press) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information; assists in the analysis of information, to include the impact on the countries and thematic mandates on the human rights situation in assigned area. • Drafts a variety of reports and correspondence relating to the Council as well as analytical notes on the discussions of the HRC and its subsidiary bodies and mechanisms. • Participates in hearings and consultations; prepare summaries of results. • Maintains awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal developments in the HRC. • Participates in human rights training programmes for State representatives, representatives of the civil society and human rights non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to promote national capacity building. • Reviews human rights issues, including their gender dimensions, and participates in discussions with other Human Rights Officers (HROs) on the integration of these issues into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes. • Participates with other HROs in discussions on the role of the HRC in preventing human rights violations or seeks other remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future. • Liaises with States, NGOs, Civil Society organizations, UN agencies and other partners. • Designs and maintains database to track project progress. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level university degree in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field. (Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination. No examination is required for candidates in peacekeeping missions.)

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area. (No experience is required for candidates who have passed a United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination.) Experience in servicing meetings of a UN intergovernmental body is desirable. Experience in servicing UN human rights mechanisms is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
