Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development (OISC), in the Non-Governmental Organizations Branch (NGOB). OISC, under DESA, provides substantive support to the work of the United Nations General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development. The Associate Information Systems Officer reports to the Information Systems Officer, under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Branch.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Information Systems Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Participates in preparing user requirements and other technical specifications.
- Assists in the design, development and installation of information systems.
- Undertakes analysis of well-defined modules within the system, develop enhancements and new features to existing systems; may design and implement small, stand-alone systems as needed (e.g. to meet individual user requirements).
- Undertakes rigorous testing and proving of applications software.
- Maintains assigned portions of systems, providing operational support for system’s applications, analyzing and implementing system changes/upgrades, etc.
- Participates in developing and maintaining Information Systems project plans and schedules. Supports the maintenance of NGO Branch applications and the ICSO database: creates and maintains user accounts and access, provides user training, and monitors the IT system.
- Writes and develops programs to interface with existing systems.
- Ensures data security and integrity.
- Participates in developing disaster recovery plans.
- Prepares, updates and maintains system’s documentation and related technical/procedural manuals.
- Assists in the set-up and monitoring of software performance measures.
- Participates in Helpdesk support services for reporting and resolving technical end user issues with NGO Branch applications, databases, and answers end user questions. Provides on-site support for troubleshooting, resolving, and reporting technical issues to the appropriate support teams; collaborates with OICT and other UN IT service providers to resolve technical issues; maintains clear documentation on status and resolution of issues using NGO Branch issue tracking applications.
- Participates in facilitating communications between ITSD and its clients for good client relations and be responsible for small to medium client accounts.
- Assists in the creation and maintenance of web content in the six official working languages, and monitors and maintains web content, including the information on events and event registration, operations and activities in response to user requests.
- Advises users on the most suitable hardware and software for different tasks; maintains and enhances software.
- Drafts training materials and conducts training sessions and demonstrations of systems for users.
- Participates with senior staff in assessing and testing new technology.
- Performs ad hoc duties as required.
Education
- A first-level university degree in computer science, information systems, mathematics, statistics or related field is required.
Work Experience
- A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in the planning, design, development, implementation and maintenance of computer information systems or related area is required. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P). Knowledge of Drupal, Git, Javascript/HTML/CSS, and Oracle SQL is desirable.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
