Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Programmes and Communications Team in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG SVC). The Associate Political Affairs Officer reports to the Deputy Team Leader of the Programmes and Communications Team as First Reporting Officer, and the Team Leader as Second Reporting Officer.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Researches, gathers and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including UN partners, academia, government, NGO and the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to the conflict-related sexual violence agenda. • Assists senior officials by drafting and translating briefing notes, background papers and talking points in English and French to assist the SRSG in her political engagement. • Supports the preparation of high-level meetings and field visits of the SRSG on Sexual Violence in Conflict; Prepares summaries of meetings and draft a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports in English and French. • Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in assigned country portfolios, including through regular liaison with UN field colleagues to support their implementation of the conflict-related sexual violence mandate. • Provides input on the conflict-related sexual violence mandate in accordance with Security Council resolutions 1820, 1888, 1960, 2106, 2331 and 2467 into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes, and engages with Security Council members on the mandate. • Participates in discussions with relevant authorities and other influential actors with the aim of addressing conflict-related sexual violence. • Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to assigned area. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related area. A first-level degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree and no experience will be accepted for candidates who have passed the Young Professional Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P).

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. No experience is required for candidates who have passed the Young Professional Programme Examination/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) Experience working with United Nations Security Council or similar international body on conflict-related sexual violence mandate is required. Experience working in support of a field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping operations, special political missions, agencies funds and programmes), or other similar international organization on the implementation of conflict-related sexual violence mandate is required.
Languages
Fluency in English and French, is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This position is temporarily available for six months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment. While this temporary job opening may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.
