Job Description

Texas A&M University – Texarkana has launched the Better East Texas initiative, an educational campaign to address the needs of this historically underserved region. To support this initiative, we are inviting applications for the Associate or Full Professor & Department Chair, Social Work position. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a new academic program intended to provide a positive impact on East Texas. With funding from the 86th Texas Legislature, Texas A&M University-Texarkana is hoping to attract a cadre of excellent faculty who will contribute to the best possible future for our service region.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  •  Teaching across social work curricula, including generalist and clinical social work classes; curriculum design in alignment with Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) 2015/2022 and a student-centered, equitable and inclusive pedagogy. 
  • Advise social work majors from our diverse student body and contribute in other ways to the social work program, including the accreditation/reaffirmation and field education processes. 
  • Work collaboratively with faculty across disciplines
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Conduct and publish field specific research to enhance the general body of knowledge in social work.
  • Collaborative research with undergraduate and graduate students is encouraged. 
  • Present research findings and other academic papers at national or professional conferences. 
  • Support and participate in college committees and professional organizations to develop professional partnerships and meet the institution’s strategic goals. 
  • Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 
  • Support all college initiatives to recruit and retain talented students, faculty, and staff.

Department Chair—Position Responsibilities  

  • Oversee class scheduling including working with the dean, advising, and others to manage scheduling challenges, low-enrolled classes, workload, etc.
  • Manage departmental budgets/participate in annual budgeting process (includes professional development funds)
  • Hire adjunct faculty (includes working with HR, credentialling, etc.)
  • Initiate hiring of full-time faculty.
  • Work with marketing and communications on program marketing and recruiting
  • Assist Program Coordinators with oversight of program curriculum.
  • Build/facilitate community relationships (i.e., develop and maintain internship sites) in collaboration with Social Work Field director.
  • Work with deans/IER/Provost to facilitate program accreditation requirements in collaboration with BSW and MSW program directors
  • Conduct/facilitate departmental assessment efforts.
  • Review student retention and graduation data and work with faculty and other educational support units to work to improve retention/graduation rates in collaboration with BSW and MSW program directors.
  • Work with educational support units (i.e., career development, university advancement, marketing, advising, registrar, admissions, recruitment, and others) to facilitate departmental needs (i.e., substitutions, prerequisites, etc.)
  • Work with the dean to evaluate annual faculty performance.
  • Work with the dean to staff standing and ad-hoc department/college committees.
  • Address student concerns and be point of contact for students.
  • Coordinate faculty advising for the department.
  • Update/maintain the department’s web presence.
  • Develop/oversee centers and other departmental initiatives (if applicable)
  • Coordinate department programming/events including clubs, recognition events, other student group activities
  • Oversee/manage student workers. Graduate teaching assistants and graduate non-teaching assistants
  • Build relationships with other academic partners to create 2+2s, 3+1s, other transfer pathway opportunities
  • Respond to departmental concerns/issues as they arise
  • Workload release of two (2) courses per long semester

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :

Minimum Qualifications: Associate Professor

  • Earned DSW or Ph.D. in social work, social welfare, or closely related field and a master’s degree in social work from CSWE accredited institutions,  
  • At least two years of post-master’s social work practice experience 
  • At least four years teaching experience in a social work program with a record of teaching excellence.
  • Evidence of an ongoing scholarship and research agenda with a minimum of two (2) peer-reviewed publications.

Minimum Qualifications: Full Professor

  • Earned DSW or Ph.D. in social work, social welfare, or closely related field and a master’s degree in social work from CSWE accredited institutions,  
  • At least two years of post-master’s social work practice experience 
  • At least ten years teaching experience in a social work program with a record of teaching excellence.
  • Evidence of an ongoing scholarship and research agenda with a minimum of four (4) peer-reviewed publications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates that are licensed, or license-eligible, as a social worker in Texas, Arkansas, and/or Louisiana.  
  • Record of teaching excellence in social work or related field 
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills 
  • Demonstrated commitment to or interest in program develop and curriculum development 
  • Experience working with CSWE accreditation 
  • Clinical experience working with children, trauma, or addictions 

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel and work beyond normal office hours.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
