Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This post is located in UNEP-Ecosystems Division, Marine and Freshwater Branch/Marine, and Coastal Ecosystems Unit, at the Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
• Works with key clients to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of UNEP’s monitoring and evaluation (M&E) programme for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR), providing support to UNEP’s Programme Management Officer for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of GFCR programme development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; and identifies and tracks follow-up actions. • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of GFCR M&E programmes, operations, and other activities,to include collecting, analyzing, and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from GFCR M&E programmes. • Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging coral reef issues and trends and participation in evaluations, research activities, and studies. • Assists the Programme Management Officer for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning and facilitating workshops and other interactive M&E training sessions and assisting in developing the M&E plans the client will use to deliver M&E throughout the GFCR life-span. • Participates in M&E survey initiatives; assists with the design of data collection tools; issues data collection tools; reviews, analyzes, and interprets responses; identifies problems and issues; and prepares preliminary conclusions related to M&E of the GFCR. • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to M&E analysis reports. • Provides administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics. • Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of GFCR M&E training workshops, seminars, etc.; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics and activities. • Participates in field missions, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection. • Supports in the coordination of activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and preparation of related documents and reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget). • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, environmental sciences, data science, or a related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or a related area is required Experience working in international organizations and intergovernmental settings is desirable. Experience within the United Nations system or other large multilateral organizations is desirable. Experience in supporting multi-stakeholder engagement and coordination is desirable Work experience in developing countries and within multi-cultural teams is desirable. Experience working on or with coral reef initiatives is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
Assessment

This is a project post. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her.
