United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and in support of peace operations, as well as through the development of standards, policies and norms.

The conflict in northeast Nigeria is in its 16th year and continues to cause suffering for millions of Nigerians particularly women and children. It has also displaced over two million people, mainly in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. The Borno State Government aims to address displacement through returns and resettlements. However, 12 out of 15 return areas have seen the most explosive ordnance incidents, accounting for 85% of civilian casualties. Nigeria ranked sixth globally in mine-related casualties in 2023. UNMAS Nigeria works to reduce these risks through mine action, education, and capacity building for local authorities.

As Associate Programme Officer you support UNMAS as follows:

  • Build relationships with stakeholders, support meetings, and contribute to planning processes for durable solutions to internal displacement;

  • Monitor trends and needs, assist in drafting proposals, project documents, and funding agreements, and support the design of new activities;

  • Analyze funding agreements, track programme results, draft reports, and ensure timely delivery of activities while coordinating with implementation teams and donors;

  • Maintain records, contribute to best practices, document lessons learned, and support the management of risk and issue logs;

  • Prepare briefing notes, talking points, presentations, and field visit summaries, while contributing to communication products and public information dissemination;

  • Etc.

Part of the Talent programme “Swiss Youth at the United Nations / World Bank Group“, this position is sponsored by the Peace and Human Rights Division (PHRD). An International UN Youth Volunteer contract ensures that travel, relocation and UN health insurance costs are covered. Additionally, a monthly living allowance is paid.
