Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences (ADG/SHS), guidance from the Director for Research, Ethics, and Inclusion (REI) the Chief of the Section Inclusion, Rights, and Intercultural Dialogue (IRD), and direct supervision from a Programme Specialist in the Section for Inclusion, Rights, and Intercultural Dialogue, the Associate Project Officer will oversee the coordination of component 2 of the ‘Fostering Positive Transformations in AlUla project which aims to bolster the development of intercultural competences for intercultural learning, exchange and dialogue.
The overarching objective of the project is to promote inclusive, participatory and community-centered development through the provision of support for sustainable tourism, wellbeing and the employability of youth and community members. This aligns with the priorities to enhance cohesion and resilience amongst AlUla residents, which is at the heart of the Saudi Vision 2030 and Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU)’s strategy, particularly the establishment of AlUla as a social innovation and knowledge hub. It is intended to have impact beyond Al Ula, creating scalable models that can be replicated nationally, regionally, and internationally, in line with the priorities and objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda.
Main duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Providing overall coordination for the delivery of component 2 of the project, including the oversight over the budget, supervision of contractors, liaison with internal and external project partners, and reporting to the donor.
  • Coordinating the training of the staff of the Royal Commission for Al Ula – including the Rawi and Rangers – on how to facilitate different UNESCO methodologies to develop intercultural competencies, including the Story Circles methodology.
  • Providing technical assistance to the trained facilitators within the Royal Commission for Al Ula to create sustainable structures through which to implement the methodologies for the benefit of Al Ula and beyond, including through support to the development of tailored ‘Plans of Action’.
  • Coordinating the development of a ‘human museum’, in close coordination with the Al Ula Masterplan, and within the framework of the creation of the ‘life and memory gardens’, as a means of further institutionalizing the methodologies to develop intercultural competencies.
  • Overseeing various outreach activities, including the organisation of a photo exhibition, short documentary, and dedicated publication, to promote capacities to engage with the various methodologies related to the development of intercultural competencies.
  • Providing assistance to any other activities or actions required within the framework of the project.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
  • Masters Degree in the Social or Human Sciences (social and human sciences, human rights, international relations, economics, gender studies, social communication, education or other relevant field).
  • A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Work Experience:
  • Minimum two years of progressive relevant professional experience in the area of the social and human sciences, inclusive development, multi-disciplinary research and knowledge production or related field.
  • Experience liaising and collaborating with stakeholders.
Skills and competencies:
  • Good analytical/synthesis skills
  • Excellent (oral and written) communication skills, including the ability to draft and produce a variety of written material in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge of e-learning tools and methods
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience managing trainers and facilitators for capacity-building
  • Experience managing donor relations
  • Experience managing external contractors
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and to maintain good working relations within a multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative and learn quickly and on the job.
Languages:
  • Excellent knowledge of English and French.
  • Other UN languages, in particular Arabic, are an advantage.
